Melvista Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

Ten geldings have accepted for the $125,000 Melvista Stakes. Nine of them had their last start in the Listed J.C. Roberts Stakes over 1800m on the 12th of March, while the other runner came via a 1920m race at York. Two runners are sired by Oratorio, and trainer Daniel Morton has two runners.

The early favourite is Demolish who ran 2nd in the Lex Piper Stakes then 2nd in the J.C. Roberts. Second favourite is Another Chino who won the J.C. Roberts but meets the runner-up 2kg worse at the weights. Third favourite is Playhouse Patron who was 4th in the Roberts, while Axeman’s Jazz ran 3rd in that race. All other runners are currently $30 or more.

2023 Melvista Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Another Chino (9)

One of two runners trained by Daniel Morton who trained Alaskan God to win this race last year. Another Chino won over 1800m at Ascot on 22 February, then won the J.C. Roberts beating 8 of the other runners in this race. Looks the best of them but gets a 2kg penalty which will make things interesting.

2. Fly Away Home (7)

Has 2 wins from 12 starts – both over 1400m. Finished 10th in the Roberts and din’t appear to stay. Prefer others.

3. Demolish (4)

Ran 2nd in the Lex Piper Stakes then 2nd in the J.C. Roberts. Meets the winner 2kg better at the weights and has strong claims.

4. Playhouse Patron (8)

Was 4th in the Roberts where he kept coming gamely and looks like a stayer in the making.

5. Cruisey Roy (10)

One of two runners sired by Oratorio (the other is Truevinsky) who finished 5th in the Roberts. Not the worst.

6. Wozzeck (6)

Finished 7th in the Roberts. Has only won once in 11 starts. Prefer others.

7. Lord Randolph (3)

Ran 6 lengths 6th in the Roberts where he faded in the straight. Looks tested.

8. Truevinsky (2)

Finished 0.7 lengths 2nd in a 1920m race at York on 6 March. Rough place chance.

9. Axeman’s Jazz (1)

Was 3rd in the Roberts at only his 4th race start. Place chance.

10. Big Red Hawk (5)

Keen early leader in the Roberts before weakening in the straight to finish 15th. Looking elsewhere.
