Herbert Power Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Good Weather: Fine

The early scratching of Kalapour, who stays in Sydney, leaves nine runners to go around in the Herbert Power Stakes.  The Danny O’Brien trained Carini is the favourite following his last start Flemington victory.  He’s a horse on the way up.  Brayden Star has been well fancied in early betting and drops 3kg in weight after winning the Benalla Cup at his last start.  United Nations, Military Mission and Daqiansweet Junior are the other horses under $10-1.

Herbert Power Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner

1. Daqiansweet Junior

Have always had a bit of time for this horse.  He won an Adelaide Cup 18 months ago before running third in the Sydney Cup.  Has been slowly building this prep and gets here fourth up.  Last time he was fourth up he finished sixth in a Melbourne Cup.  Draws perfect and gets B Shinn.

2.Regal Power

Was a good run here first up in the Heatherlie and good last start in the Ansett Classic when a narrow second. Wouldn’t shock to see him win.

3. Kalapour  – SCRATCHED

4. Military Mission

Won the Newcastle Cup two back.  Was fourth in The Metropolitan last start.  Now gets Moreira.  Chance.

5. Mount Popa

Started $201 in the Hill Stakes last start and was safely held.  He’s not easy to have off recent form.

6. Rebel Racer

Group 2 Adelaide Cup winner in the spring.  His third in the Ansett last start suggests the stable has got him going well again.

7. Brayden Star

Beat a handy field in the Benalla Cup last start and drops down to 53kg for this.  He’s rock hard fit and racing well.  Can make a good case for him.

8. Carini

Important now with Danny O’Brien.  Loved the win at Flemington last start when heavily backed.  He looks a really talented stayer but it’s going to take a good training performance going from 1700m to 2400m.

9. United Nations

He was good last start at Flemington behind Mostly Cloudy who subsequently ran well in a Bart Cummings.  Right stable!

10. Ferago

Had absolutely no luck last start and still found a way to win at Mount Gambier.  This is a lot tougher.
