McNeil Stakes 2023 Race Details
Race 5 at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday the 2nd September 2023.
The HDF McNeil Stakes is a Listed race held at Caulfield Racecourse and is run over 1200 metres on Memsie Stakes day. It is run under set weights and penalties conditions and is for horses aged three-years-old. The total prize money is $200,000 this year.

McNeil Stakes 2023 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
Eight colts, three geldings and a filly have accepted for the Group 3 McNeil Stakes. The familiar combination of Shinn and Cummings combine with the early favourite Barber. The unbeaten filly Legacies, is the current second elect. Veight, Hedged and Little Brose are on the next line of betting. The remaining runners are longer than $10-1.
McNeil Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner
1. Little Brose
Group 1 Blue Diamond winner who gets the winkers back on. Thought he was disappointing first up but it wouldn’t surprise if he improved sharply.
2. Barber
Godolphin colt resuming. He’s trialled up strongly in Sydney and draws a lovely gate with Blake Shinn in the saddle. Top hope.
3. Veight
Was a dominant winner of the VRC Sires in the Autumn, then ran fourth in the Sires at Randwick on heavy ground. He’s a nice horse with plenty of upside.
4. Le Zebra
Another resumer. Won a couple of off season two year old races in May. Happy to watch him first up.
5. Scheelite
Thought he was a sneaky good run first up in the Vain Stakes here a fortnight ago. Layed in back to the inferior ground yet was really strong late and in front past the post. The extra 100m suits.
6. Make A Call
Is a ten start maiden but has some form around some talented horses in the spring. Like the booking of John Allen.
7. Coincide
Kicked back to win strongly at Sandown last start. This is harder but he maps well and has a strong trainer / jockey combo.
8. Armed Forces
Resumes. Might need the run here first up.
9. Heman
Son of I Am Invincible trained by the Snowdens. He was placed at listed level at Eagle Farm in June. Might be looking for a touch further than 1200m.
10. Deadly Press
Was second in the Oaklands Plate in July. Happy to watch him first up.
11. Hedged
Was a dominant winner at Seymour last start. Like barrier 3 for him. He can push forward and run well here.
12. Legacies
Sole filly in the race. Is unbeaten winning a maiden, then the Listed Anzac Day Stakes by a big space in the Autumn. Kah goes on for this first up. One of the chances.
