Anzac Day Stakes Race Information

The Anzac Day Stakes is a 1400 metre handicap race for two-year-olds run by the Victoria Racing Club in April. It is held at Flemington as one of the feature events of the Anzac Day meeting.

In 1986 the race was held as the Listed VRC Spring Classic Preview over 1600m and was won by Tim’s Gambler. In 1997 it was run as the VRC Assissi Centre Handicap for that year only, then in 1998 it became the Anzac Day Stakes over 1427m and was won by Grand Archway. The distance was 1400m from 1999.

In 2023 the Anzac Day meeting at Flemington was cancelled out of respect for the family of jockey Dean Holland who died in a tragic accident in the opening race at Donald the day before. This race was rescheduled over 1400m at Sandown Hillside on the following Saturday.
