Matron Stakes 2022 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
Nine mares have accepted for the $200,000 Group 3 Matron Stakes. The Tom Dabernig trained Flying Mascot is the current favourite. She won well at Caulfield last start and looks set to peak here third up from a spell. The second favourite is Turaath. She brings the Futurity Weight For Age form in here and will make her own luck up on speed.
Promise Of Success has been very good at her two runs back in Sydney. Groovy Kinda Love gets blinkers for the first time and James McDonald, while Rocha Clock is one of the two John O’Shea runners in the race. The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.
Matron Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Turaath
Had a little set back before her last run in the Group 1 Futurity. Lead at a fast tempo there and fought on fairly well. Think she is ready to peak now back to Flemington where she is a winner of two of her three starts.
2. Yes Baby Yes
Was third at Launceston in the Vamos Stakes last start. Hasn’t run a place in four previous attempts at Flemington. Place chance at best.
3. Rocha Clock
Down from Sydney to run here. Finished second in The Invitation and the Hot Danish last prep. Settled back and never came on at Rosehill first up. She’s much better than that.
4. Flying Mascot
Only collared late by Probabeel first up, then dominated from the front at Caulfield last start. Bolted in third up over this distance in the spring. Could end up with a dream sit here. The one to beat.
5. Invinciano
Fourth up here. Has finished sixth at all three runs this prep. 1600m suits. Maps well.
6. Score
Bolted in when having first run for new trainer Annabel Neasham last start. Up in grade but has a place chance here.
7. Promise Of Success
Second of the John O’Shea runners. Was second in the Triscay, then held up in the Guy Walter but still closed off very strongly to run second. Synthetic Hoof Filler first time is a big query.
8. Bound To Win
Has four wins and five placings from 15 career starts. Safely held behind Flying Mascot last start. Could improve but prefer others.
9. Groovy Kinda Love
Five year old mare trained by Mick Kent. Ran home very strongly this track and trip behind the subsequent winner Yonce last start. James McDonald booked with blinkers for the first time. Look out!
