Phar Lap Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Heavy Weather: Mostly Fine with a chance of a shower.

Fourteen runners have accepted for the $200,000 Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes though there is three early scratchings which brings the field down to eleven. The Chris Waller stable is saddling up four runners, Waterhouse/Bott saddling up two runners and the other trainers have just the one runner each.

The early favourite in this race is the Chris Waller trained Fangirl who was luckless last start behind Hinged in the Surround Stakes. She only meets one rival from that contest and is a well deserved favourite. Silent Impact is the next horse in the betting who ran poorly by his standards last start in the Hobartville Stakes.

Roots rounds out the top three in the betting and she is no stranger when facing the favourite and stable mate Fangirl, as they did battle in the Reginald Allen late last year where there was little between them.

Phar Lap Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Extreme Flight (14)

Back from the Group 1 Futurity Stakes where he was average. Doesn’t mind a soft track. Drawn poorly. Place chance.

2. Mr Mozart (12)

Will appreciate the step up in distance but has never faced a wet track. Drawn poorly. Has done okay in similar grade previously.

3. Silent Impact (9)

Ran below standard in the Hobartville. Won’t mind the soft conditions but will need to lift.

4. Cape Breton (8)

Returned a gelding in much weaker company. Has had a trial since that run. Would rather watch but not the worst.

5. Character (3)

Won first-up at Kembla Grange in much weaker grade. Can’t have here.

6. Gracilistyla (6)

Entered for Canterbury Thursday. This looks too hard.

7. Son of Sangio (10)

Going for three in a row. Stepping up from a Class 1. Can’t have.

8. Hinged (2)

9. Never Been Kissed (1)

Total forgive first-up as she has a poor recovery. Her best can give this a shake. Place chance.

10. Espiona (11)

11. Fangirl(7)

Had excuses in the Surround Stakes where she was only 2.25 lengths back in fifth after being held up near the 300m mark.  One to beat.

12. Roots (5)

Returned a winner at Warwick Farm. She is entered at Goulburn on Friday and here, but this looks likely. Has taken it to Fangirl previously. Big chance.

13. Cap Estel (13)

14. Sanstoc (4)

Entered at Goulburn on Friday as well. Outclassed here.
