The race was first held as a Listed race called the  Wiggle Quality Handicap for three-year-old fillies and older mares over 1400m at Warwick Farm in 1996 when it was won by Destruct.  It was named after a mare called Wiggle who was a champion as a 2YO and 3YO (1958-59) and later went to the USA where she was a winner. It was held at Randwick from 2002 to 2004 before returning to Warwick Farm in 2005 where it became for mares four-years and up. In 2012 it changed from a handicap to a set weights and penalties race.  In 2014 it was upgraded to a Group 3 race then in 2015 the name was changed to the Guy Walters Stakes to honour trainer Guy Walter (1954 – 2014). In 2016 it was upgraded to the current Group 2 status and moved to the current location of Randwick.
