Peter Young Stakes – 2023

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Eleven have accepted for one of the key lead up races to the Group 1 Australian Cup which will be run in two weeks time at Flemington.  Both the first and second place getters in last years Melbourne Cup – Gold Trip and Emissary – resume and they are currently one two in betting.  Surefire is third pick.

1. Gold Trip

2022 Melbourne Cup winner.  Resumes.  Has five placing from six first up starts and has drawn to get a lovely run in transit.  The market late is going to be your best guide with him.

2. Emissary

Won the Heatherlie first up over 1700m at Caulfield last campaign before going onto win the Geelong Cup and run second in the Melbourne Cup.  Where he gets to in the run from barrier 2 is my query with him.  He was worse than midfield in all his spring runs.

3. Numerian

Handy galloper from the Neasham yard.  Finished second first up in the Chelmsford last prep and was fifth in the Caulfield Cup.  Each way chance.

4. Young Werther

He ran well in the Carlyon first up, however probably has to go right back from the outside gate.  Potentially a better betting proposition third up.

5. No Compromise – SCR

6. Il Paradiso

First time we have seen him since running a place in the 2019 Melbourne Cup.  Would be a huge training effort to have him winning this.  Happy to watch him here first up.

7. Surefire

Boxed on well first up in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick.  Now gets to a more suitable trip with Jamie Kah in the saddle.  Maps well.  Strong each way chance.

8. Keats

Loved the run first up in the Carlyon Cup.  Meets tougher opposition here but expect him to come across and either lead or sit outside lead from the wide gate.  Could take some catching.

9. Yaphet

Was second in the SA Derby last May.  He was solid to the line after being snicked back first up.  Can settle closer in the run here.

10. Steinem

Nice mare who was a good second in the Matriarch in the spring.  Her jump outs suggest she is going well enough to be very competitive here first up.

11. Deny Knowledge

Will roll forward but didn’t do enough in the Carlyon for me to be recommending here.
