Neville Sellwood Stakes – 2022

Track: Likely Heavy Weather: Chance of Showers.

Fourteen runners have accepted for the $160,000 Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes and there have been no early scratchings. The Chris Waller stable and Paul Perry stable saddle up two runners each whilst the other stables only have one entry each.

Mount Popa is the favourite for this race on the back of his decent run behind Stockman in the Sky High Stakes. He drifted a touch on the day as he was sweating badly in the parade ring but still performed well. Polly Grey is second in the betting after failing on the quick back-up last start.

Sky Lab is the third favourite and he had excuses behind Mount Popa in the Sky High Stakes.

Back to a Group 3 after a modest run in the Australian Cup. Goes okay in the wet. Take on trust.

2. Spirit Ridge (11)

Plain first-up. Needs to improve.

3. Marroni (13)

Come over from New Zealand for the wet tracks. Drawn horribly. Prefer to watch.

4. Mount Popa (6)

Beaten last start but was brave. Drawn ideally and maps well. One to beat.

5. Sky Lab (7)

Had excuses second-up. Drawn okay and gets conditions to suit. Can improve.

6. Maximal (9)

Can’t Have.

7. Purple Sector (8)

Winkers on, blinkers off. 2000m suits but will need to improve.

8. Esti Feny (5)

Gelded. 764 days since last run. Watch.

9. Sikandarabad (2)

Quick back-up. Entered in at Albury also. Others.

10. Blue Soldier (10)

Can’t have on recent form.

11. Alakahan (1)

2000m suits but needs to lift.

12. Olympic Gaze (4)

Outclassed.

13. Polly Grey (3)

Back in grade, down in weights. Drawn ideally and loves the conditions. Big chance.

14. Monegal (12)

Quick back-up, looking for back-to-back wins. Chance again.
