Queensland Derby – 2022

Track: Soft Weather: Fine

An open affair with the talented and progressive Dark Destroyer heading the market and looking for back to back wins. Paternal finds Hugh Bowman and represents the Chris Waller stable. Pinarello looks very hard to beat on form despite the draw and will be hitting the line hard. not prepared to overlook Velvet Lady at $201 who is a promising stayer and can give this a shake. Expecting decent tempo in the race, pending scratchings.

1. Tutukaka (11)

Proving to be costly to follow but has enough ability to win this race. No favours from the draw but more than capable. Keep safe.

2. Dark Destroyer (1)

Barrier 1 may be slightly tricky for Dark Destroyer but it was a very good win last start and strikes another winnable race. Provided the gaps open at the right time Dark Destroyer should be hard to hold out.

3. Caboche (9)

Trialled outstandingly and nabbed on the line last start. Interesting to note that the horse Caboche beat in its trial Quiet Michael also came out and won recently. Waller must always be respected and Caboche is one of his major players in this. Hard to beat.

4. Menazzi (17)

No favours from the draw and Menazzi is some query at the trip but, respecting the Waller placement and polish.

5. Pinarello (20)

Pinarello warrants respect despite the draw. Very impressive winner over in NZ and overall strikes a very winnable race. Luck in running will be crucial to its chances.

6. Red Wave (13)

Can’t have.

7. Southern Stock (19)

Should be trying to land on the speed from the wide draw and chances enhanced if the rain arrives. Some hope.

8. Balmaurice (16)

Can’t have.

9. Sea Treasures (14)

Was just fair last run and needs to improve vastly off that to take this out.

10. Ting Tong (18)

Excellent last run behind a classy galloper. Ting Tong will be hitting the line hard but has to be some query from barrier 18.

11. Satirical Glory (12)

Going along okay but this looks a bit too tough.

12. Paternal (3)

Strong claims here launching from a good draw whereas most of its rivals are drawn wide. Should be doing no work in the run and that could prove the difference to its chances and others. Hard to beat.

13. Dark Rebel (21)

Can’t have.

14. Global Ausbred (5)

Going well but does look slightly short in a steep rise in grade. Top 4 hope.

15. Impel Gazelle (15)

Can’t have.

16. Anythink Goes (4)

Couldn’t back it for the win but some kind of chance with the handy draw. Has to find a peak on ratings to take this out.

17. Nest Egg (6)

Not hopeless at odds. Has been taking time to find form here but there is a sense of timing about Nest Egg. Good chance.

18. Villaden (7)

Respecting the Waller placement. Has to find a bit on form but going well enough to take this out.

19e. Turn Me Over (10)

This looks too tough.

20e. Velvet Lady (2)

No good on the synthetic last run when over racing badly and not handling the small field. Certainly some chance if it starts here and does have the ability. Can win at bottler odds.

Can’t have.
