Port Adelaide Guineas 2021 Preview

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Fifteen three-year-olds have accepted for the listed Port Adelaide Guineas.  There are nine geldings, three colts and three fillies.  Five of them had their last start in a Benchmark 70 run over the mile at Morphettville on March 27, two others ran in the listed race named after former Australian hoop Claire Lindop on the same day and a further three ran in the Mornington Guineas on March 20.  The early favourite in the betting is the Anthony & Sam Freedman trained Chica Fuerte.  She ran a narrow second at Flemington two starts ago, then was able to hold off her rivals to win the Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley last start.  The second favourite is the talented Ecumenical.  She finished fourth in last years Group 1 Thousand Guineas and won her latest start over 1600m at this track.

Let’s Karaka Deal resumed in the Mornington Guineas where he finished second and is suited stepping up in distance here.  Royal Mile has three wins and three seconds from her six career starts.  Casino Seventeen is another with a strong winning strike rate, he has won four of eight and like Royal Mile is attempting listed level for the first time.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

Port Adelaide Guineas Runner by Runner

1. Let’s Karaka Deel

Has strong spring form lines.  He finished second in the Group 3 Norman Robinson at Caulfield then ran fifth in the Victoria Derby.  He began this preparation with a nice pipe opener in the Mornington Guineas on March 21 and is more suited here stepping up in trip.  A leading chance.

2. Confrontational

Hit the line well when second to the talented Ain’tnodeeldun before spelling.  Has struggled to find that form this time around.

3. Casino Seventeen

Has strung together three wins in a row and just keeps improving.  The pot is that the wins have all been over 1400m and he is unproven at this distance.  A wide barrier doesn’t help either.

4. Saltpeter

On the quick back up after finishing fourth at Caulfield last week.  He is limited but is fit and racing well.

5. Royal Mile

He has won 3 of his 6 starts.  Two back he fought on bravely to win after being wide the trip at Naracoorte, then once the gap appeared last time shot through and accelerated a way like a really nice horse.  1800m shouldn’t cause any concerns.

6. Crown Mint

This Gordon Richards trained runner has been thereabouts at all 4 of his runs this preparation.  Rough place hope.

7. Ironedge

Comes from the leading Price and Kent Jnr Stable.  He won a strong Ballarat maiden first up.  Then outclassed in the Australian Guineas but bounced back with a good second at Sandown last time.  Tricky gate but look for him hitting the line hard out wide.

8. So Let’s Toast

Showed some talent early in his career but has not done much in recent times.

9. Montepulciano

Improved second up to finish third behind Royal Mile.  Would need to improve again to be a factor here.

10. Morty

No match for Royal Mile last start but did hit the line solidly from back in the field to run second.  Consider for multiples.

11. Betta Eddie

Ran well at Oakbank last start but that was in a much weaker race.  Needs to improve many lengths.

12. Ichibansan

Yet to run a place from 7 attempts.  Can’t see him playing a role here.

13. Chica Fuerte

Ultra consistent mare who has finished in the top 3 at 8 of her 10 starts.  She ran a strong second in a fast run race at Flemington on March 6, then lead all the way to win the listed Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley last start.  Note that she did have a strong bias in her favour last start and the second horse has since failed.

14. Ecumenical

Stepped sharply from 1200m to 1600m second up and was impressive leading all of the way in the Clare Lindop Stakes.  Also ran well in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas last year.  Only going to be fitter here third up and has a great record at this track.  Has a great chance.

15. Valanetti

The second of the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr runners.  She has finished fourth at both runs this time in and should be fitter now.
