Edward Manifold Stakes – 2023

Sixteen fillies line up for the 2023 Edward Manifold Stakes. Eight of them had their last start in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on 23rd September, two in the Listed Exford Plate over 1400m at Flemington on 16th September and two in the Oaks Trial over 1800m at Flemington on 24th September, while the rest came via different races.

The early favourite is Legacies who has won 2 of her 4 starts. Second favourite is Poifect who has a win and a place from 2 starts. Third favourite is De Sonic Boom who has placed in 3 of 4 this campaign. Nodachi can handle soft going. Konasana only just missed in the Oaks Trial. Zardozi is on a six day back-up and is proven on softer going, while Aprilia looks as if the distance will suit. All other runners are currently $16 or more.

1. De Sonic Boom (7)

She ran 4th in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes over 1100m then ran 3rd in the Atlantic Jewel after beginning awkwardly and getting held up, then ran on strongly for 2nd in the Jim Moloney last start. Steps up to 1600m for the first time. Chance.

2. Legacies (14)

Quality filly who won both starts in her first preparation. She resumed for 2nd in the Group 3 H.D.F McNeil Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on 2nd September then finished 6th in the Exford Plate where she had a poor recovery.  Forgive the last run. Looks the likely winner.

3. Dolphin Skin (9)

Her first 4 runs were at Flemington where she had a win and 2 places. Returned from a 10 week let-up to finish 3.7 lengths back in the Jim Moloney at Caulfield. Prefer others.

4. Zardozi (1)

Her three starts this campaign have left a lot to be desired. Can’t have.

5. Chill The Krug (3)

Resumes for 3 lengths 8th in the Jim Moloney and has a win and 3 places from 6 starts. Not the worst.

6. Coco Sun (8)

Won her first 2 starts before 9th in the Jim Moloney. Looking to others

7. Aprilia (5)

Raced in New Zealand earlier in the year. Ran 4th in the Jim Moloney. Place chance.

8. Nodachi (12)

Has a win and 3 places from 6 starts. Outside chance.

9. Subrising (11)

She has a win and a 2nd from her last 3 starts. Tend to get back in her races and might be disadvantaged in this large field. Could surprise.

10. Konasana (4)

Raced well in NSW before a close 2nd in the Oaks Trial. Respect.

11. Grinzinger Belle (2)

Has to lift on form.

12. Amazonian Lass (15)

Disappointed when last of 15 in the Group 2 Furious Stakes over 1200m at Randwick, then came from the outside barrier for 5th in the Jim Moloney. Could surprise.

13. Poifect (13)

Won her first start by 1.5 lengths over 1235m at Geelong before 1.5 lengths 3rd in the Jim Moloney where she chased hard out wide. Can fight out the finish.

14. Basilinna (16)

Strong win in a maiden plate at Cranbourne. Place chance.

15. Tietar (10)

This looks too tough.

16. Ethel Maude (6)

Prefer others.
