Coolmore Stud Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Sixteen colts and three fillies have accepted for the famous stallion making race.  James Cummings and Godolphin won this race last year with In Secret and have another great chance again here with Cylinder.  He followed his narrow second in the Golden Rose with a fifth in The Everest last start.   The Golden Slipper winner Shinzo is next in the betting.  He gets James McDonald and has a sense of timing about him third up.  The best backed in early betting is Steparty coming back to 1200m after running in the Caulfield Guineas.  He gets blinkers for the first time and has been $18 down to $11 with the bookies.

Coolmore Stud Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner

1. Shinzo

Waller and McDonald combine with the Golden Slipper winner Shinzo.  He has been underwhelming at face value in his two runs this prep but he found a tricky spot in The Everest last start and I thought his run was better than it looked.  He was good in a jump out down the straight on Tuesday and gets here third up.  Feels like he has been half a run short all prep and it would not be a surprise to see him jump out of the ground here.

2. Cylinder

Current favourite.  Ran a brave third in the Golden Rose after a wide run in transit then was a very solid fifth in the Everest.  That looks a solid piece of form for this.  Tim Clark and barrier 14 looks perfect.  The one they all have to get past.

3. Don Corleone

Was third here in the Danehill two back then close up again in the Gothic last start.  Right stable.

4. Veight

Comes back to 1200m after running second in the Caulfield Guineas.  Has always shown good ability and I like that the blinkers go on.

5. King’s Gambit

Was an impressive winner of the Roman Consul at Randwick last start.  Has always shown good ability but needs everything to go his way.

6. Steparty

Looked the winner of the Guineas on the turn before weakening to run third.  Might not of seen out the mile.  Unbeaten prior to that.  Back to 1200m with the blinkers on for the first time could be a good recipe.

7. Arkansaw Kid

Burst through to win the Gothic Stakes at Caulfield by a narrow margin last start.  This is harder.

8. Snapback

Started $151 in the Golden Rose, lead them up and was no match.  Hard to recommend off that.

9. Scheelite

Colt with a big turn of foot.  Likely to be running on at the end.

10. I Am Unstoppable

Has been very good with out winning in all three runs this prep.  Was second to Stretan Angel here in the Danehill at his latest run and gets a big jockey change with Blake Shinn going on.  Easy to make an each way case for him.

11. Ozzmosis

Won his first three starts impressively then was beaten as a short priced favourite in the Roman Consul last start.  Looked good winning a jump out here during the week.  Chance.

12. Mexico

Was fourth in the Poseidon here two back then second in the Roman Consul at big odds last start.  Doubt he can win.

13. Butch Cassidy

Freshened after a good fourth in the Golden Rose and ticks the straight box.

14. Moravia

Another who has been freshened after running in the Golden Rose.  Would need to have found a few lengths to be any chance here.

15. Celui

Backs up after winning a benchmark 70 at the Valley last Friday night.  That form is surely not strong enough.

16. Nadal

Had genuine excuses in the Golden Rose.  He’s one to consider at odds for multiples.

17. Tiz Invincible

Has won three from four this prep.  Could run well here coming off the freshen up after running sixth in the Flight Stakes five weeks ago.

18. Stretan Angel

Talented filly who was a good winner of the Danehill here last start.  Like that she has been given a tick over jump out in between runs on her home track at Pakenham.  Looks set to peak on Saturday.

19. Treasurway

Not here.
