There are 11 runners for the 2023 Prince Of Wales Stakes, with 7 geldings, one stallion and one mare. There are three 4YOs, two 6YOs, three 7YOs and one 8YO. Six runners had their last start in the Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes over 1000m at Ascot on 21st October, while the rest came via different races. Two are resuming.

The early favourite is Red Can Man who won the Crawford Stakes. Second favourite is My Bella Mae who finished a half length behind him. Third favourite is Hot Zed who finished 3rd. Snowdome resumes after 20 weeks and can go well first-up, while Laverrod hasn’t started since November 2022 but has trialled well. The other runners are currently $12 or longer.

1. Red Can Man (5)

Won the Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes over 1000m at Ascot on 21st October, beating 5 others in this field. He has great statistics at this distance and Shaun McGruddy sticks. He carries 3.5kg more than last time though which will make it a little harder for him. One of the main chances.

2. Hot Zed (4)

He resumed for 3rd in the Crawford Stakes with good closing splits. Seven of his 10 wins have been at Ascot. In the mix.

3. Laverrod (1)

He hasn’t started for 51 weeks when he finished 5.5 lengths 10th in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes over 1100m at Ascot on 12th November 2022. Place in a recent trial at Lark Hill and gets the inside draw and William Pike. Place chance.

4. Nerodio (8)

This 8YO is the oldest runner in the race this year. He’s had 5 starts this campaign without winning, but hasn’t finished worse than 4th. Has placed in 7 of 10 at Ascot and goes well at the distance. Place hope.

5. Snowdome (7)

Rommel stallion who resumes after 20 weeks and can go well first-up. He has 5 wins and 5 places from 13 runs at this track. Don’t dismiss.

6. Man Crush (6)

Resumed for 2 lengths 5th in the Crawford Stakes where he faded late. Prefer others.

7. River Beau (3)

Was slowly away and didn’t warm up until late when resuming for 4 lengths 8th in the Crawford Stakes. Can improve second-up.

8. Go Forward (2)

Ran on strongly from the back of the field for 4th in the Crawford stakes. Could surprise.

9. My Bella Mae (9)

The only mare in the race this year. She was held up on straightening and finished 0.5 length 2nd in the Crawford Stakes with good closing splits. She has 5 wins from 7 starts at Ascot, including two wins at Listed level. With a clear run I think she can win this.
