In 1988 it was a Listed race over 1200m and was won by Ableson. In 2004 and 2005 it was run over 1100m and it was reduced to the current 1000m in 2006. Several winners of this race have gone on to win at Group 1 level. Sheidel won the 2017 Oakleigh Plate, Summer Beau won the 1996 & 1997 runnings of the Fruit ‘N’ Veg Stakes, Barrosa Boy won this race twice and won the 1992 Castlemaine 10,000 while Medicine Kid won the 1990 Railway Stakes.
The race is named after Ray Crawford who served on the Committee of the Western Australian Turf Club for more than a decade. In the 1960’s he spent four years as Vice Chairman, and he was a founding member of WA’s Totalisator Agency Board. He passed away in 1980.
