Australian Derby 2023 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
Quality field for the stayers. Sharp ‘N’ Smart looks nicely placed in this and will take a stack of beating despite the wide draw. Pericles seemed to have its chance last start and could only settle for 2nd but J-Mac sticking is a solid push. Mark Twain is a promising import while Manzoice should be ready to peak and Japanese Emperor has claims as well.
Australian Derby 2023 Runner by Runner
1. Sharp ‘N’ Smart (17)
Will have to be very good to overcome the barrier but is in the right race and should prove hard to hold out with a very in form Hugh Bowman in the saddle. With even luck from the draw it should be too good for this lot.
2. Manzoice (14)
Should relish getting out to this trip and ready to peak. Hard to beat over the 2400 and right in the mix for the Chris Waller camp.
3. Elliptical (3)
Has been hit and miss this prep, sometimes with excuses. Does have form around the favourite and maps for a kind run in transit. Goes in the mix against these.
4. Pericles (6)
Had its chance last start and lost in a photo finish. J-Mac sticking is a positive sign and this race is within reach.
5. Williamsburg (12)
Been around the mark but needs luck from the draw. Place chance.
6. Andalus (8)
Not the worst and has form around the favourite. Respect any market moves.
7. Full Of Sincerity (16)
Building up to a win and gets the right race here. Tricky draw but Lane helps.
8. Japanese Emperor (1)
Like the form around it. Should bounce forward from the draw and can get a nice run in transit with most chances in this drawn wide. Well in the mix here.
9. Mark Twain (5)
Import from NZ shown good promise. Gets the good draw, keep an eye on the market.
10. Suizoro (4)
Can’t have.
11. Tapildoodledo (11)
Prefer others.
12. Virtous Circle (18)
Luckless last run but 18 is no favours here. Can win but luck in running will be crucial.
13. Major Beel (15)
Major Beel can run an okay race here with luck from the draw.
14. High Approach (10)
Can’t have.
15. Stroke Of Luck (9)
Very unlucky last start and should have won. Harder here but must be respected off that. In the mix, just needs luck from the draw.
16. Cheval Savant (2)
Can’t have.
17. Domingo (13)
Prefer others.
18. Twigman (7)
Looks too tough.
