Race 7 at Newcastle Racecourse on Friday the 3rd of March 2023.
The Newcastle Stakes, previously called the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap, is a Group 3 race held at Newcastle Racecourse and is run over 1400 metres. It is run under quality handicap conditions and is the feature race of the meeting. The total prize money is $200,000 this year.

Five of the runners had their last start in the James Ruse Handicap over 1400m at Rosehill on 18 February while the rest all came through different races. The early favourite is Cross Talk who came 2nd in the James Ruse. Second favourite is Pizarro who finished 0.5 length 2nd over 1300m at Randwick last start. Third favourite is Kiss Sum who resumed for 2.5 lengths 6th over 1100m at Rosehill. All other runners are currently $14 or longer.

Resumed for 6th in the James Ruse. Tens to need a run or two to show his best. Rough place chance.

Ran 7th in the James Ruse when fresh. Drawn barrier 1 and has won at the track before. Respect.
8. Cuban Royale (6)
Has won 3 from 5 this campaign and was 3rd in the James Ruse last start. One of the main chances.
9. Kiss Sum (5)
Resumed for 2.5 lengths 6th over 1100m at Rosehill. Ran 2nd at only previous start here. Place chance.
10. Bellatrix Black (2)
The only mare in the race. Finished strongly for 2.3 lengths 6th in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes when resuming from a long break. Not the worst.
11. Pizarro (9)
Finished 0.5 length 2nd over 1300m at Randwick last start. Has 3 wins and 7 places from 11 starts. Should go well.
12. Pandano (7)
Unlikely.
