Might And Power Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Soft Weather: Fine

A cracking field has been assembled for this years Might And Power Stakes with most of the Cox Plate fancies set to line up.  The top six in race book order had their last start in the Underwood Stakes at Sandown two weeks ago, while Anamoe and Benaud come down from Sydney.  Anamoe has been a drifter in early betting, Alligator Blood and Zaaki have firmed.

Might And Power Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Zaaki

Won the Tramway first up at Randwick on a Heavy 10, then forced to race outside lead stepping from 1400 to 1800 last time and just got a bit tired late.  Better set up here third up at 2000m.  Kah sticks.

2. I’m Thunderstruck

Stormed home to win the Makybe Diva two starts ago, then looked the winner at the 200m mark in the Underwood before floating to the line.  Not as convinced as others that he didn’t see out the trip.  Happy to trust that SP (started firm favourite) however barrier 1 is far from ideal for him.  Will need luck.

3. Alligator Blood

Flying this prep.  Unlucky first up, nailed right on the line second up, then proved the doubters wrong at 1800m last start to win the Underwood.  Tim Clark comes down from Sydney again to ride.  One of the key winning chances.

4. Mr Brightside

Got conditions to suit and bolted in in the Feehan two back.  Was disappointing in the Underwood.  Should get all favours in the run from barrier 4 but needs to find a few lengths on last start.

5. Mo’unga

Funny run last time in the Underwood.  Looked gone and then picked up to run second…  Hard to trust but it wouldn’t shock if he was to win this.

6. Nonconformist

Was second in this race last year at a price, before going onto run second in the Caulfield Cup.  Has disappointed at his last two, however it wouldn’t surprise to see him improve back to Caulfield. 2000m suits.

7. Anamoe

Current Cox Plate favourite.  Has won both starts this prep.  Stable is flying as is James McDonald.  Drawn well.  The only little query is that he pulled up lame after last start.  Watch betting late!  His best wins this.

8. Benaud

Blinkers go on.  Was runner up in the ATC Derby in April.  Good second in the Kingston Town last start and is the only one of these to have had their lead up run over 2000m.  That could hold him in good stead here.
