Gloaming Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Heavy   Weather: Heavy Showers

Nineteen runners (with five of them emergencies) have accepted for the $500,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes and there have been no early scratchings.

This race is often used as a stepping stone for the Spring Champion Stakes with eleven winners of this race going on to win the feature event. Since this race was made, there has only been one filly in it’s history that has saluted, which is depicted in this year’s field with only one filly accepting in Madame Odette ($18.00) for the Tony Gollan Stable.

Williamsburg is on the quick back from last weekend and he is leading the betting at $4.20 and is one of the two entries for the Ryan/Alexiou team with Brosnan ($23.00) being the other.

Gloaming Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Political Debate (10)

Finished a fair way back in the Run To The Rose and then dead last in the Golden Rose. Drops back to Group 3 and has done okay in the wet previously.

2. Promitto (1)

Gets a drop back in grade following a 5.5-length defeat in the Golden Rose. Gets a nice draw and he is proven on a very heavy surface. A good run won’t surprise especially with Rawiller back aboard.

3. Williamsburg (18)

On the quick backup following a nice win in the Dulcify Stakes. Drawn the car park and will need luck but has done everything right in the lead-up.

4. Brosnan (8)

Finished well back in the Golden Rose and I am a bit surprised that they accepted him here as he does look like a horse who prefers to be on top of the ground. He will love the extra distance but decent form makes him hard to have.

5. Sharp N Smart (2)

Won his first-up run in New Zealand and the last time they came to Australia, they got close on two attempts. Yet to run in the wet has to be a concern. Drawn well and can run well.

6. Matcha Latte (19)

Finished 3.5 lengths off Golden Mile in the Ming Dynasty and has since trialled well for this. Has drawn poorly though and will need some luck.

7. Flag of Honour (14)

On the quick back up where I thought his wheels spun a bit in the heavy going. Draw might not be too bad at this point of the day but given his performance last week, happy to go elsewhere.

8. Owen County (5)

He his the line okay so far this preparation but he would need to be better to be in the finish here.

9. Coppleson (13)

Savaged the line in all three starts of his career over decent distances and he wasn’t far away over 1800m last start. Handles the wet, drawn okay, and will love the distance. Has to go into the multiples.

10. Manzoice (17)

Hit the line brilliantly in the same race as Coppleson except this bloke finished second and Manzoice was finishing better. The difference though is that he is yet to tackle a wet track of this magnitude and he will need some luck from the wide gate.

11. Bunker Hut (7)

Broke his maiden last start at Kembla over the mile whilst losing a plate in the run. Has run well on the heavy prior though nothing like what he will face on the weekend. If Tommy Berry can get him in a good spot, I see no reason why he can’t be in the finish.

12. Monastery (6)

Looks to be building for big run over distance and I am unsure if this is the race. He comes into this second up following a nice run over 1500m and he can run okay in the heavy.

13. Fearless Knight (4)

Still a maiden and struggled in his one go on the heavy.

14. Madame Odette (9)

The lone filly in the race. Coming off a six-length win at Toowoomba over the mile. This looks a lot harder.

15e. Perfect Thought (16)

Blinkers on first time. Failed in Class 1 last start. Prefer others.

16e. Stylised (3)

Prefer others.

17e. Field Commander (11)

Prefer others.

18e. Captain Pluto (15)

Prefer others.

19e. Pericles (12)

Prefer others.
