Roman Consul Stakes – 2022

Ten runners have accepted for the $300,000 Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes and there have been no early scratchings.

The top three in the market are Best of Bordeaux, Nettuno, and Sejardan. This race in recent years has treated Godolphin well with Paulele, Viridine, and Exosphere winning this race in 2015, 2017, and 2021. They will saddle up Selous this year, who is a $9.50 chance.

Since 2010, only one filly has won the race, and that was Jolie Bay in 2012, which doesn’t support runners like Cholante ($20.00) and Willinga Beast ($8.50) who will be looking to break that trend this year.

1. Best of Bordeaux (6)

Ran okay first up but really changed its fortunes second up when running 1.5 lengths back in second in the Run To The Rose. He has drawn well and maps to get the lead which may be ideal on the day. Wet track form brings him right into this race.

2. Sejardan (1)

He has been running okay but nothing to jump up and down about. He gets the blinkers first time which could just switch him on but he is one you really need to back if you trust, otherwise, leave it alone.

3. Sweet Ride (2)

Good win two runs back in the San Domenico before another solid run in the Run To The Rose. He has trialled well since but the question has to be over his wet track form. If he can get through the going this week, he is a legitimate chance, so maybe put him in for a place chance.

4. Nettuno (9)

Has promised to deliver so much after a promising second in the San Domenico but didn’t aim up in the Run To The Rose. Would prefer to see it here after it’s last start efforts.

5. Zoukerino (8)

Won the Rosebud nicely before failing the next start. He has since been freshened up and trialled once adequately. The blinkers go on for the first time which could spark him up nicely. Will have to improve to be a chance.

6. Kote (7)

He has entered for the Midway earlier in the day. This would be too hard for him.

7. Chairman (3)

Coming from a placing in a benchmark 64 and he has since had one trial. He is also entered for a race later in the day. He looks to have talent but this looks too hard for him, place chance maybe.

8. Selous (10)

Won a Goulburn maiden last time out by one length. Will need to be a lot better to be competitive.

9. Willinga Beast (4)

She was game in the Furious Stakes behind North Star Lass before running okay in the Tea Rose Stakes. History is against her here but the blinkers going on first time might do the trick and she comes through some nice formlines.

10. Cholante (5)

Total forgive last time at Canterbury as she was way too far back on the turn to be competitive. She is also entered for a fillies race at Caulfield, where I think she will be more competitive.
