Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

There are 14 runners for the $125,000 Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes with 13 geldings and one stallion. There are four 4YOs, three 5YOs, two 6YOs, four 7YOs and an 8YO. Two of them had their last start in the Listed Northam Cup over 1600m at Northam on 28 October, two in the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes over 1500m on 12 November and two in a Rating 78+ Handicap over 1200m on 12 November, while the rest came via different races. Trainers Daniel & Ben Pearce, Micheal Grantham and Simon Miller each have two runners.

The early favourite is Devoted who is on a seven day back-up after 3rd in the RJ Peters where he was wide throughout. Second favourite is Billy Ain’t Silly who is first-up after 44 weeks and has been trialling well. He has won 3 from 3 at this track and distance combination. Third favourite is 4YO stallion Minsk Moment who was a good winner over 1200m at Geelong before 5 lengths 9th over 1400m at Flemington last outing.

Comes A Time came from well back for 7th in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes. Let’s Galahvant was runner up in the RJ Peters. Em Tee Aye finished 0.6 lengths 4th in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes last outing. It’sarayday was heavily backed last start at Ascot and finished 0.6 lengths 4th, while Panzdown is on a seven day back-up and goes well at the track. The other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer.

2022 Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Winning Partner (12)

Tony & Calvin McEvoy have brought this seven-year-old over from Victoria. He won over 1500m at Moonee Valley on 21 October, then was 3.8 lengths 10th over 1600m at Flemington last start. Hasn’t raced here before. Prefer others.

2. Dig Deep (7)

One of two runners for trainers Daniel & Ben Pearce. Finished 5th in the Northam Cup last start and comes back in distance. Looking to others.

3. Samizdat (2)

Resumes from a 23 week spell and has won 4 of 8 when first-up. His best distance is 1200m so this looks too ambitious first-up.

4. Comes A Time (10)

One of two runners for trainer Michael Grantham. Came from well back for 7th in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes and is looking for this distance now. Place chance.

5. Minsk Moment (6)

This 4YO stallion was a good winner over 1200m at Geelong before 5 lengths 9th over 1400m at Flemington last outing. Having his first start for trainer Adam Durrant and his first race at Ascot. Prefer to see.

6. Let’s Galahvant (5)

Won three races in a row in September including the Listed Hannans Handicap at Kalgoorlie, before 1.9 lengths 9th in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes then runner up in the RJ Peters. On a seven day back-up and can figure in the finish.

7. Devoted (9)

The most lightly raced runner with only 10 starts for 4 wins and 3 places.  He ran 1.6 lengths 7th in the Asian Beau then started favourite and ran 3rd in the RJ Peters where he was wide throughout. On a seven day back-up and gets William Pike. One of the main chances,

8. Bruce Almighty (11)

Resumed after 27 weeks for 3.5 lengths 9th over 1400m at Ascot. Usually needs a couple of runs to show his best.

9. It’sarayday (4)

One of two runner for trainer Simon A. Miller. Was heavily backed last start over 1200m at Ascot and finished 0.6 lengths 4th. Capable of getting into the money.

10. Bad Wolf (1)

This 8YO is the oldest runner in the race this year and has drawn the inside barrier. Was 4th in the Kalgoorlie Cup, 3rd over 1600m at Ascot then 2nd in the Luckygray Stakes over 1800m at Ascot last week. Not the worst.

11. Em Tee Aye (8)

Won over 1400m at Ascot on 8 October then finished 0.6 lengths 4th in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes last outing. Goes well at this track and distance and rates highly with Shaun O’Donnell back on board. A key player.

12. Staralign (14)

Finished 3rd in the Northam Cup last start. Drawn the widest barrier and prefer others.

13. Panzdown (13)

On a seven day back-up and goes well at the track. Not the worst.

14. Billy Ain’t Silly (3)

First-up after 44 weeks and has been trialling well. He has won 3 from 3 at this track and distance combination. Has never won first-up.
