Atlantic Jewel Stakes – 2023

Ten fillies have accepted for the 2023 Atlantic Jewel Stakes. Four runners had their last start in a 3YO Fillies Plate over 1200m at Moonee Valley on 26 August that was won by Inhibitions and two had their last start in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes over 1100m on 19 August won by Charm Stone, while the rest came through different races with 2 of them having their first run this preparation. Anthony & Sam Freedman have 2 runners. Two runners are sired by I Am Invincible and two are sired by Zoustar.

The early favourite is Charm Stone who won the Quezette Stakes when resuming from a 27 week spell. Second favourite is Inhibitions who won at this track and distance last start, beating 3 of the other runners in this race in an 11 horse field. Third favourite is Pride Of Sullivan who has a win and a very close 2nd from her 2 starts. Mollynickers has won both starts this preparation, while Right To Party hasn’t run a bad race with a win and 3 places from 4 starts. The rest of the runners are currently $10 or more.

1. Charm Stone (9)

Winner of the Group 3 Quezette Stakes when resuming from a 27 week spell. She ran on strongly to take over at the 100m and was strong through the line. She is one of 2 runners in the race sired by I Am Invincible (the other is Zoukerette). Trainer Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) won this race with Night Raid in 2020. Charm Stone won her only previous second-up start and rates highly.

2. Treasurway (1)

Came 3rd at her first 5 starts before getting her win in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes over 1200m at Morphettville Parks on 29 April. Resumes here after 19 weeks but not sure how she’ll handle a track without a long straight. Not in my top 4.

3. De Sonic Boom (3)

One of 2 runners for Anthony & Sam Freedman who won this race with Zouzarella in 2021. She was slowly away and worked home strong out wide for 2.9 lengths 4th in the Quezette. Blinkers go back on. Prefer others.

4. Zoukerette (8)

Hasn’t raced since a 0.4 length win in the Listed Tattersall’s Stakes (2YO) over 1400m at Eagle Farm on 24 June where she led all the way and held on for a narrow win. Prefer to see.

5. Inhibitions (6)

One of 2 runners sired by Zoustar (the other is Right To Party). She has more race experience than any other runner with 2 wins and 4 places from her 8 starts. She comes off a win at this track and distance on 26 August where there was a big gap between the first two and the 3rd horse. Trainer James Cummings has already won this race twice with Troach in 2022 and Exhilarates in 2019. One of the main chances.

6. Mollynickers (10)

Impressive Pierro filly who won the VOBIS Gold Ingot over 1400m at Caulfeild at her last start 7 weeks ago. Get s a rider change from Carleen Hefel to Luke Nolan. Commands serious thought.

7. Right To Party (5)

Freedman runner who has a win and 3 places from 4 starts. She finished 3rd to Inhibitions last start after being held up from the 400-200m and running on strongly late. Jockey Mark Zahra won this race on Night Raid in 2020 and Shoals in 2017.  Don’t dismiss.

8. Oz Empress (7)

Resumed from an 18 week spell to go down late and finish 2nd to Inhibitions over 1200m here after leading most of the way. Looks to have improvement in her and can figure in the finish.

9. Beauty Rising (2)

Knuckled at the start and can be forgiven for her last run where she finished 6.4 lengths behind Inhibitions. Looking elsewhere.

10. Pride Of Sullivan (4)

Trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes whose father David Hayes (son of champion trainer Colin Hayes) won the first edition of this race with Stay With Me in 2015. She has only had 2 starts for a solid win at Moe then a close 2nd at Moonee Valley on 12 August. One of the chances.
