Champagne Stakes 2023 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
An intriguing race. Militarize is coming off a big last start win and will be hard to hold out with a repeat effort. Don Corleone needs luck from the draw but is nicely placed in this field. Tom Kitten showed a neat turn of foot last start and can go on with things here while Pier Pressure ran well above its quote last start and can go on with things in this.
Five runners had their last star in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce over 1400m at Randwick on 1 April and five in the Listed Fernhill Handicap over 1600m at Randwick on 8 April, while the rest came via different races.
Champagne Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner
1. Don Corleone (11)
Solid last start effort when hitting the line hard. Will be running on in this and goes in the mix.
2. Militarize (7)
A surprise last start winner that just needs to repeat that effort to be too good for these. Goes in the mix but does look short enough getting back onto a drier track.
3. Amur (9) – SCRATCHED
4. Tom Kitten (6)
Showed off a strong turn of foot last star to win well and can do the same here. Nash does the steering and this race is within reach.
5. Bases Loaded (10)
Should lead up and be hard to hold out in a suitable race. Clark does the steering and this field suits. Expect it to take some holding out in this suitable affair.
6. Make A Call (4)
Maps nicely from the barrier and can give this race a shake. Marquand is riding well at the moment and the field is suitable.
7. Felix The Scat (12)
Promising type that bumped into a handy one last start. Can go close in this.
8. Kintyre (5)
Expected more last start. Needs to lift.
9. Townsend (8)
Good run last start. Can build off that and take this race out.
10. Tannhauser (1)
Can’t have.
11. Pier Pressure (2)
Lovely effort last start running well above its odds. Maps well in this and the gun Dylan Gibbons is aboard. Should be hard to hold out in this field.
12. Mah Ali (3)
Prefer others.
