There are three four-year-olds, three five-year-olds, two six-year-olds, one seven-year-old, one eight-year-old and one ten-year-old. Three runners had their last start in the Group 3 R.J. The betting is very open and the early favourite is Magnificent Andy who has 2 wins from 5 starts this campaign. Second favourite is Vast Art who resumes after a 17 week spell and has won 1 of 2 first-up starts. Third favourite is Pompey who ran a close 2nd in the Luckgray Stakes last start. Let’s Galahvant is on a 7 day back-up and was 0.8 length 3rd last start, while Ihts Closing Inn is the only mare and resumes after winning 5 in a row at the end of last campaign. The other runners are currently $14 or longer.
2023 Carbine Club of WA Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Let’s Galahvant (2)
He is on a 7 day back-up and was 0.8 length 3rd in the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes over 1500m at Ascot on 18th November where he was overhauled late. Looks well-suited here and is a winning chance.
2. Magnificent Andy (4)
He has 2 wins from 5 starts this campaign and was 0.86 length 4th in the R.J. Peters after being held up from the turn to the 150m. Unlucky not to get closer and is a genuine chance.
3. River Rubicon (10)
Ran 5th in the Listed Luckygray Stakes over 1800m at Ascot on 11th November coming from 11th with good closing splits. In the mix.
4. Vast Art (1)
Resumes after a 17 week spell and has won 1 of 2 first-up starts. Has trialled well and is one of the main chances.
5. Ihts Closing Inn (3)
The only mare in the field this year and one of 2 runners sired by Sessions (the other is Big Screen). Resumes after winning 5 in a row at the end of last campaign including the Listed Belmont Oaks over 2000m and the Listed Belmont Classic over 2400m. At her best she could win this..
6. Western Temple (11)
This 10 YO is the oldest runner this year and is one of 2 runners trained by Peter Fernie (the other is Billy Ray). It’s been a while since he won a race but he still puts in a good run now and again. Prefer others.
7. Titan Blinders (9)
Last start he ran 2.6 lengths 6th in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes over 1400m and runner-up in the R J Peters. It was a decent run on a day that favoured leaders. His statistics aren’t great at Ascot so looking elsewhere.
8. Eeyore Wayz (5)
He tend to get right back in his races and run home strongly. On a seven-day back-up and can make his presence felt.
9. Big Screen (8)
Unplaced in all 4 runs this preparation. Unlikely.
10. Billy Ray (7)
Finished 2.3 lengths 7th in the R.J. Peters after being held up from the turn to the 1500m. Not the worst.
11. Pompey (6)
In great form with 2 wins and 3 2nds from his last 5 starts. He ran on from midfield to finish on the winner’s heels last start at Ascot in the Luckgray Stakes. Definite chance.
