Boulder Cup 2021 Preview

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

There is a field of 11 runners  for the $122,500 Boulder Cup and seven of them had their last start in the Coolgardie Cup over 1760m at Kalgoorlie on 5 September. There are six geldings, four mares and a stallion and all are five to eight-years-old. Peter Fernie has two runners. The early favourite is six-year-old stallion Living The Dream who was a 2.6 length winner of the Coolgardie Cup last outing. Second favourite is Pink And Purple who finished 5th in the Coolgardie Cup after winning three in a row before that. Third favourite is Friar Fox who won this race last year and comes off 2nd in the Coolgardie Cup.

Divine Shadow was 2nd in this race last year and has three places from four starts at this track.  Media Baron finished last in the Farnley Stakes last start and hasn’t raced at this track before. Cuban Twist finished 3rd in the Coolgardie Cup last outing, while Bella’s Idol ran 3rd over 2200m at Belmont last start.  All other runners are currently 16 to 1 or longer.

2021 Boulder Cup Runner by Runner

1. Divine Shadow

This six-year-old gelding trained by Brett Pope ran 2nd in this race last year. He is one of three runners sired by Blackfriars (the others are Friar Fox and Cuban Twist) and ran 4th in the Coolgardie Cup last start when first-up. This is a similar preparation to last year when he resumed for 3rd in the Coolgardie Cup. He has three places from four runs at this track. One of the chances..

2. Missile Launch

An eight-year-old gelding trained by Vaughn Sigley who has not placed in all four runs this preparation. He did win the 2020 Listed Kalgoorlie Cup over 2200m after running 4th in this race last year, but has disappointed recently.

3. Friar Fox

She won this race last year after running 2nd in the Coolgardie Cup. She has drawn the inside barrier and comes off 2nd in the Coolgardie Cup again. There is a chance that history could repeat itself and she could win again. One of the key players.

4. Media Baron

This seven-year-old Written Tycoon gelding has the highest prizemoney of any runner this year. He was beaten 12 lengths to finish last in the Listed Farnley Stakes last start. Appears safely held.

5. Living The Dream

Won  the Coolgardie Cup by 2.6 lengths at his first run at Kalgoorlie. Has yet to win beyond that 1760m distance, but is having his first start for trainer Brian Allen and blinkers come off for the first time. Should make his presence felt.

6. Bella’s Idol

This eight-year-old Vital Equine gelding fished 2nd over 2100m at Belmont on 14 August, then 3rd over 2200m at Belmont on 28 August. Likely to race on the speed and could place.

7. Cuban Twist

One of two runners for Peter Fernie. Wound-up gamely to just miss when 2nd in the Kalgoorlie Tattersall’s Cup over 1600m on 22 August, then battled evenly for 3rd in the Coolgardie Cup. Rough hope.

8. Mexi Cola

This six-year-old gelding trained by Rod Brown at Esperance has four wins from 19 starts including a win at this track. He finished 7th in the Coolgardie Cup and this looks too strong.

9. Pink And Purple

She won three races in a row at this track before finishing 3.6 lengths 5th in the Coolgardie Cup where she had a virus. Gets the services of William Pike and is one of the main chances.

10. Secret Pearl

This five-year-old So Secret mare has six wins, with four of them over a 2200m distance. Hasn’t raced here before and could surprise.

11. Stafford’s Lad

Trained by Daniel Morton, this seven-year-old Demerit gelding has a win and four places from his last six starts. Not the worst.
