The Goodwood 2023 Preview

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

There are 17 runners for The Goodwood with 11 geldings, 3 mares, one stallion, one colt and one filly. There are two 3YOs, four 4YOs, four 5YOs, four 6YOs, two 7YOs and an 8YO. Five of the runners had their last start in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes over 1100m at Morphettville on 6 May, three in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes over 1200m at Morphettville on 6 May, two in the Wagga Town Plate over 1200m at Wagga on 4 May and two in the Listed Hareeba Stakes over 1200m at Mornington on 22 April, while the rest all came via different races. Three runners are sired by Brazen Beau. Trainer James Cummings has 3 runners and Matthew Ellerton has 2.

The early favourite is Lofty Strike who has been racing in great form before hitting a heavy track in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes. Second favourite is Zapateo who was held up in the Robert Sangster and still finished 3rd less than a length off the winner. Third favourite is Kallos who has won all 3 starts this campaign. Another Award was 2nd in the Robert Sangster, while Front Page got nabbed on the line in the Wagga Town Plate. The rest of the runners are currently over $12.

2023 The Goodwood Runner by Runner

1. Front Page (9)

Got nabbed on the line in the Wagga Town Plate last start after a torrid run. He’s won 6 of his 18 starts and is in the mix.

2. Kementari (7)

One of 3 runners for James Cummings (the others are Kallos and Zapateo). He is the oldest runner this year and although he hasn’t won for a while he always runs well. Always a threat.

3. Savatoxl (6)

Won this race in 2021. He’s won both races this preparation including the D C McKay Stakes which was his lead-up back in 2021. He has the impressive strike rate of 19 wins from 39 starts and shouldn’t be overlooked.

4. Kallos (4)

Has won all 3 starts this campaign including the R N Irwin Stakes. Has to be considered a major chance.

5. Curran (8)

Won The Country Discovery at Gellong 2 starts back, which has been a good form race. Forget his last start in the Hareeba Stakes where he was held up near the 200m and went to the line untested. Sneaky chance at huge odds.

6. Free Of Debt (12)

Not going well enough.

7. Zapateo (17)

One of 3 runners sired by Brazen Beau (the others are General Beau and Larimer Street). She was held up in the Robert Sangster and still finished 3rd less than a length off the winner. Was unlucky in the barrier draw, getting the extreme outside. Still think she can feature in the finish.

8. Seradess (14)

Won the Proud Miss Stakes on this day last year. Last start she led in the Robert Sangster before being overtaken in the final 100m and finishing 5th. Place chance.

9. Lofty Strike (10)

3YO who has been racing in great form before hitting a heavy track in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes. Wouldn’t surprise to see him in the finish.

10. Zoutori (2)

One of 2 runners for Matthew Ellerton (the other is General Beau). Nicely drawn and appears well-weighted.

11. General Beau (11)

He did beat Anamoe as a 2YO. Ran 3rd in the McKay Stakes and can improve 3rd up.

12. Frankie Pinot (13)

Good wet-tracker whose chances will improve if there is more rain.

13. Not An Option (1)

Won the Hareeba Stakes last start by a good 2 length margin. Has the inside barrier and is in the mix.

14. Larimer Street (5)

Rises in class here and looks unlikely.

15. Mnementh (16)

Knuckled down for a last stride win in the Wagga Town Plate. Not the worst.

16. Royal Merchant (15)

The only filly in the race. Won the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes at this track and distance last start and caries 3kg less here. Wouldn’t surprise to see her in the finish.

17. Another  Award (3)

Finished 2nd in the Robert Sangster after being last 400m from home. That was a huge run and she gets a chance here with the light weight.
