The Everest 2020 Preview

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

Twelve speedy runners will contest for the $15,000,000 The Everest. Three of them had their last start in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes, three in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes and two in the Group 3 The Shorts.  The early favourite is five-year-old  Classique Legend who followed a win in The Shorts with 2nd in the Premiere Stakes. Second favourite is Nature Strip who has 14 wins from 25 starts but has disappointed at his two runs this time in. Third favourite is Gytrash who won the Group 3 Concorde Stakes last outing.

Behemoth comes off back -to-back Group 1 wins in the Memsie Stakes and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes but is dropping back in distance.  Libertini won the Premiere Stakes by 2 lengths last start. Trekking finished 2nd in the Moir Stakes first-up. Bivouac was 3rd in The Shorts, while Tofane finished 5th in the Gilgai Stakes.  All other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer.

2020 The Everest Runner by Runner

1. Nature Strip

He has 14 wins from 25 starts but has been favourite at both starts this time in for 1.5 lengths 2nd in the Concorde Stakes and 4.1 lengths 4th in the Premiere Stakes. It is true that his best form is third-up, but I don’t think he is the same horse he used to be and I think he’ll get beaten again.

2. Trekking

Ran 3rd in this race last year behind Yes Yes Yes and resumed from a 15 week break for a fast finishing 2nd in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m. That looked a great lead-up and he is one of the main chances.

3. Classique Legend

He finished 6th in this race last year but was very unlucky with being held-up, checked and steadied. He has had two good runs since resuming with a win in The Shorts and 2nd in the Premiere Stakes. Can win.

4. Santa Ana Lane

Was the runner-up in this race last year but is not going as well this preparation. He has a powerful finish when he’s at his best.

5. Behemoth

He has won all three starts this preparation with the G3 Spring Stakes, the G1 Memsie Stakes and the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. The last two wins were both over 1400m so he is dropping back in distance, but is one of the main chances.

6. Bivouac

Resumed for 3rd in The Shorts. He has won a Warwick Farmtrial since then and has excellent form second-up.

7. Gytrash

Beat Nature Strip in the Concorde Stakes when resuming and has won a trial since then. Is a very good sprinter, especially over 1000m and 1200m is his limit.

8. Eduardo

He won the July Sprint and the G2 Missile Stakes, both at Rosehill, before being runner-up to Classique Legend in The Shorts. Won a Warwick Farm trial by 6.5 lengths on 9 October and coul drun well at long odds.

9. Dollar for Dollar

Got into this race late when Farnan was scratched. He was runner-up in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes before a very close 2nd in the Gilgai Stakes over this distance.

10. Tofane

In the autumn she was an impressive winner of the All Aged Stakes over 1400m, and hasn’t been far off the winner in her two races since resuming.

11. Libertini

Resumed after 30 weeks with a terrific 2 length win in the Premiere Stakes where she had the best overall race sectionals and the best last 800m race sectional of the day at 1200m. Has to be included in all the exotics.

12. Haut Brion Her

This mare has six wins and three 2nds from her 10 starts and can never be underestimated. She followed a good win in the Sheraco Stakes with 2.5 lengths 7th in the Golden Pendant where she raced fiercely early on and then later had to be checked off heels. She drops back to her preferred distance here and has to be included in the chances.

13. Deprive – 1st Emergency

Will be running in the Sydney Stakes.

14. Special Reward – 2nd Emergency

Will be running in the Sydney Stakes.

15. Standout –  3rd Emergency

Will be running in the Sydney Stakes.

16. Tactical Advantage – 4th Emergency

Will be running in the Sydney Stakes.
