Caulfield Classic 2020 Preview

Track: Soft-Heavy   Weather: Rain

A field of thirteen is set to line up for one of the key Victorian Derby lead ups.  The race is worth $250,000.  Most of these had their last start in either the Derby Trial run at Flemington or the Super Impose which was also run at Flemington.  In an open race, the early favourite is Let’s Karaka Deel.  His run in the Derby Trial was much better than the eleventh reads in the form guide, it was luckless and were he to of seen clear air he might of won the race.  Albarado’s run in the Super Impose was very good from back in the field, he looked the winner with 100 m to go before weakening late.  Cetshwayo was a long price in winning the Derby Trial under informed jockey Jamie Kah.

Hit The Shot has ran well in all three career runs to date and he draws well in eight for  jockey Fred Kersley who will be keen to make the most of this opportunity, he is a talented young ride making his way.  Redwood Shadow looks very progressive and will have his first start on his home track, this can often be a big advantage especially for the young horses.  The Pres has had five starts this preparation which is the most out of any horse in the field.  He is not showing signs of slowing down after catching the eye late at Flemington.  Tour of Duty is still a maiden but wont be for much longer and gets the blinkers on here.  Celestial Sol is fit and racing well.  Johnny Get Angry for legendary AFL coach Denis Pagan looks to be progressing well towards a Derby.  Troadiare is another horse seeing his home track for the first time.  The rest of the runners are longer than $20-1.

2020 Caulfield Classic Runner by Runner

1. Celestial Sol

Had to do it the hard way sitting outside the lead at Flemington, he toughed it out okay there.  One start for one win on the heavy and can find a spot in the front half of the field from barrier 1.  Each way chance.

2. Albarado

Showed a good turn of acceleration before tiring late at Flemington.  Looks suited here fourth up at 2000m and wont have any issues if the rain arrives.  One of the main chances.

3. The Pres

Started big odds at Flemington and made up good ground to be beaten just 2.5 lengths.  Hugh Bowman goes on here and this is proven in the going.

4. Johnny Get Angry

Hit the line hard from back in the field at Flemington and his breeding suggests the more rain the better.  Looks primed to run a great race third up.

5. Cetshwayo

A combination of the booking of Jamie Kah and a tounge tie saw him turn a Geelong 8th into a Flemington win.  Will be fitter again here and I wouldn’t think a soft track would worry him.

6. Troadaire

Showed a good turn of foot to win an Echuca maiden first up and then backed it up in town finishing second.  Perfectly drawn in barrier 7 for Craig Newitt.

7. El Santo

Finished off well after getting a long way out of his ground at Moonee Valley.  That was a good run considering that track was favouring leaders and he was dropping back in trip.  The senior rider goes on here stepping up in trip again, could be a knock out.

8. Redwood Shadow

Another promising three year old from the Price/Kent team.  He flashed home behind a good one in Cambourne on debut and then won his maiden well last time out.  Can measure up here.

9. Hit the Shot

All three runs from this Dundeel Colt have been full of merit.  One of the chances in an open race.

10. Let’s Karaka Deel

Progressive colt who was awfully unlucky last start – he should have been right in the finish.  From barrier 11 he should be able to roll forward and find cleaner air this time around.  One of the main chances.

11. Tour of Duty

Tour of Duty looks ready to peak fourth up with the blinkers on.  At his latest run, he made up good ground to be beaten .2 of a Length on his home track of Flemington.  Can figure in the finish again.

12. Mr Roger

Thrashed Mainland in a maiden at Kilmore two back – that horse has won two races since.  However disappointed at Moonee Valley at his most recent outing, and I’m not sure he is up to these.

13. Token Spirit

Another one to come out of the race won by Cetshwayo at Flemington, he was big odds but made up ground late.  I like the blinkers going on and it’s a positive D Lane sticks.
