Scarborough Stakes – 2022

There are 10 fillies this year. Three of them had their last start in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley on 3 September and three in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes over 1100m at Flemington on 10 September, while the others came via different races. Trainer James Cummings has two runners.

The betting is fairly open and the early favourite is English Riviera who ran 4th in the Cap D’Antibes. Second favourite is Bound For Home who won the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield last start. Third favourite is Black Opal winner Queen Of The Ball who finished 4th in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes at her most recent outing. Godolphin runners Ojai and Troach are the only other runners under $10.

1. Ojai (3)

One of the Godolpin runners. Resumed from an 18 week spell for 0.4 length 2nd in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes after settling well back, then was held up and checked at the 250m for 5.1 lengths 12th in the Cap D’Antibes. Will improve from that and could place.

2. Queen Of The Ball (7)

Won the Black Opal as a 2YO before finishing 8th in the Golden Slipper. Resumed for 4th in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes and has place chances.

3. Lady Laguna (6)

Has had two runs this campaign for 4th in the Quezette then a length 2nd in the Atlantic Jewel. Genuine contender.

4. Troach (10)

The 2nd Godolphin runner. She has had 4 starts this campaign for 2 wins and a place. Followed 3rd in The Rosebud with a length win in the Atlantic Jewel. Wouldn’t surprise to see her in the finish.

5. Bound For Home (9)

Trained by Archie Alexander this filly has two wins and a place from 3 starts. She won the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield last start. Can handle rain affected ground and looks a big chance.

6. I’mlovin’ya (8)

Hasn’t been far away with 3rd in the Quezette then 3rd in the Atlantic Jewel. One for the exotics.

7. English Riviera (5)

Resumed from a 22 week spell for a 10 length win (ten – not a typo) over 1100m at Ballarat, then ran 4th in the Cap D’Antibes where she led from the 300m before being swamped near the post. Strong hope.

8. Prairie Flower (2)

Has 3 wins and 2 places from 9 starts. Resumed with a win over 1000m at Ballarat then ran 3rd at Sandown on 7 September. May find this field a little too classy.

9. Ghaanati (1)

Finished 4.3 lengths 10th in the Cap D’Antibes when resuming. Winkers go on for the first time. In the mix.

10. Galeka (4)

Broke her maiden last outing with a 1.3 length win over 1100m at Geelong on heavy going. That was a nice win but she will find this too tough.
