PJ Bell Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Heavy Weather: Showers.

Nineteen runners have accepted for the $200,000 Group 3 P J Bell Stakes with one of them an emergency and there have been no early scratchings. The James Cummings stable is saddling up five runners in the event, John O’Shea’s stable and Team Snowden are saddling up two runners each, whilst the other stables only have one entry each.

Me Me Lagarde and A Very Fine Red share early favouritism in a wide-open betting race. Me Me Lagarde is coming off a solid placing last preparation in the 3yo Magic Millions behind King of Sparta. He has since had two trials in preparation for this first-up attempt. A Very Fine Red was a black booker for us from last start where she ran a solid race in the Fireball Stakes against the boys, finishing just under 1.5 lengths off Mazu.

Godolphin saddle up the joint third favourites in Zapateo and Heresy who are both coming off fourth placings in their respective races.

PJ Bell Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Arcaded (10)

Will need to improve on the recent form.

2. Sneaky Five (5)

Ran well first-up. Will appreciate the sting out of the ground and back to her own sex. Drawn ideally and can run a sneaky race.

3. Mallory (19)

No match last start. Drawn the car park. Prefer others.

4. Hellfest (12)

Going for four-in-a-row. Good winner last start in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes. Heavy track brings her back a touch, but she is classy.

5. Heresy (18)

Drawn poorly. Good fourth placing behind Hinged last start. Back to 1200m a slight query.

6. Gimme Par (6)

A victorian visitor who has had a consistent career. Drawn well but unknown in the heavy and the Sydney way of going.

7. Me Me Lagarde (16)

First-up. Has tremendous form but hasn’t run on the going. Fitness?

8. Najmaty (15)

Can’t have.

9. Robodira (14)

Can’t have.

10. A Very Fine Red (11)

Big run first-up on the heavy, finishing 1.4 lengths off Mazu who was already one run in. Trailed since. Drawn okay and can win this.

11. Latino Blend (1)

Wants a dry track.

12. Smirnova (9)

Not one I can back on recent form.

13. Zapateo (2)

Place chance.

14. Larkspur Run (8)

Prefer others.
