P.B. Lawrence Stakes 2023 Preview
Track: Soft Weather: Fine
A capacity field of fifteen plus three emergencies have accepted for the $300,000 Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes. Mr Brightside is the class runner and is well placed here first up under weight for age conditions. Attrition is the new kid on the block and should get his chance to balance up and let down from barrier 12 with Ben Melham in the saddle. If Tuvalu could find his best then he would be hard to beat.
P.B. Lawrence Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner
1. Mr Brightside
Class runner. Won two of Australia’s big mile races in the Autumn – the All Star Mile and the Doncaster Handicap. The race looks to set up well for him from barrier 10 and he typically goes super fresh. The one to beat.
2. Regal Power
Can’t have.
3. Tuvalu
Won a Group 1 Toorak last spring and was also placed in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke and Group 1 Cantala. Didn’t come up in the Autumn. His best clearly good enough but I would have loved to have seen a little bit more in the jump outs. Shinn on is a big plus!
4. Aegon
Was last seen running fifth in the Champions Mile in Hong Kong. Gets blinkers first time here and Michael Dee but has drawn the car park. Could be the one flying late!
5. Western Empire
Has looked good at the jump outs in recent times but it’s been a while since he has done it on race day. I want to see it first.
6. El Bodegon
On a Melbourne Cup campaign. This just a pipe opener.
7. Francesco Guardi – SCRATCHED
8. King Magnus
Fresh from a let up. Doubt he’s good enough to be a serious threat here.
9. Pounding
Typically takes a run to come to hand. First four chance.
10. Buffalo River
Noted front runner trained by Michael Moroney. Will give them something to catch.
11. Pinstriped
Was very good last prep, goes well first up and has jumped out solidly. Should get a gun run in this. Chance at odds.
12. Uncle Bryn
Talented horse who had a sneaky nice recent jump out. Zahra and a positive looking map could see him run a place at nice odds.
13. Forgot You
Resumes off a lengthy break and gets no favours from the gate.
14. Golden Mile – SCR
15. Attrition
First up. Progressive four year old who was unlucky in the CS Hayes before racing wide in the Australian Guineas and just missing. Might end up on the back of Mr Brightside here which would be a lovely spot. Chance.
16e. Chassis – 1st Emergency
Is going super but this is surely too tough.
17e. Deny Knowledge – 2nd Emergency
Won the Country Oaks by a huge space before spelling. She might have a nice race in her this spring but think some of these might be a bit too strong late for her first up.
18e. Edison – 3rd Emergency
Big price Flemington winner last start. Not here.
