2021 San Domenico Stakes Race Details
Race 6 at Kembla Grange on Saturday 28 August 2021.
The San Domenico Stakes is an 1100 metre handicap race run by the Australian Turf Club. Normally held at Rosehill it is being held at Kembla Grange in 2021 due to Covid-19 lockdowns in Sydney. It is one of three Group 3 feature events on the program. The others are the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap over 1400m for three-year-olds and the Group 3 Premier’s Cup over 2000m (normally 1900m).

San Domenico Stakes 2021 Preview
Track: Heavy Weather: Cloudy
There are nine runners for the $160,000 San Domenico Stakes with four of them first-up from a spell and five that ran in the Listed The Rosebud on 7 August. This year they are all colts, and three of them are sired by Snitzel. Two runners are trained by Peter & Paul Snowden. The early favourite is Stay Inside who resumes here after 22 weeks and was the Group 1 Golden Slipper winner in March. Second favourite is Paulele who won The Rosebud by 2.4 lengths when resuming from a spell three weeks ago. Third favourite is Remarque who finished 3rd in The Rosebud.
In The Congo ran 2nd in The Rosebud. Sword Of State will be having his first Australian start and has a record of four wins and a place from his five starts in New Zealand. Captivant hasn’t raced since April when he won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. Mazu resumed for 3.2 lengths 5th in The Rosebud while Maotai ran 4th. Ranch Hand has had an 11 week let-up after disappointing as favourite at his last three starts in Queensland..

1. Stay Inside
This Extreme Choice colt trained by Richard & Michael Freedman has won three of his four starts, culminating in a 1.8 length win in the Golden Slipper over 1200m at Rosehill on 27 March. He has won of two lead-up trials and is capable of winning first-up. Expected to fight out the finish.
2. Captivant
One of two runners for Peter & Paul Snowden this Capitalist colt hasn’t raced since April when he won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. Has ability and can threaten.
3. Sword Of State
Having his first Australian start and has a record of four wins and a place from his five starts in New Zealand
4. Paulele
James Cummings trains this Dawn Approach colt who has four wins from six starts. He won The Rosebud by 2.4 lengths when resuming from a spell three weeks ago and is one of the main hopes.
5. Mazu
Resumed for 3.2 lengths 5th in The Rosebud
6. Remarque
Chased hard to finish 3rd in The Rosebud with the best last 200m race sectional. One of the chances
7. Ranch Hand
Has had an 11 week let-up after disappointing as favourite at his last three starts in Queensland..
8. In The Congo
Ran 2nd in The Rosebud and has been in the quinella at all three of his starts.
9. Maotai
Finished 4th in The Rosebud. Could surprise.
