W W Cockram Stakes – 2021

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Ten have accepted for the $200,000 Group 3 W W Cockram Stakes.  Three of these met in a mares handicap on August 14 and four are first up.  Peter Moody has two runners entered in the race.  The early favourite in the betting is the Kiwi mare Probabeel.  She won at this track and trip first up in the Autumn, before going onto win the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at her next start.  The second favourite is Instant Celebrity.  This Phillip Stokes trained mare was also a Group 1 winner in the Autumn and races well at Caulfield.

Jamie Kah stays with La Mexicana who will have the tounge tie on after a poor run last start.  Rich Hips races well fresh and is another with a good record at this track.  Paul’s Regret gets blinkers for the first time and may may push forward from a wide gate.  Parlophone is a quirky mare with a powerful finish.  Snickerdoodledandy won a benchmark 84 at Flemington in June, while Plaquette is fit and racing well.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

1. Probabeel

This five year old mare exploded away to win after sitting three wide no cover first up last preparation.   At her next start she beat a star studded field in the Futurity Stakes at Group 1 level.  Her subsequent run in the All Star Mile can be forgiven when she didn’t handle the conditions.  The class horse in the race and clearly the one the rest have to beat.

2. Instant Celebrity

The up and comer and logical danger to the favourite Probabeel.  She has a wonderful turn of foot and has gone well at both runs on this track.  Drawn to get a lovely suck from gate three and gets an inform Craig Williams.

3. La Mexicana

The addition of a tongue tie indicates she may have had genuine excuses for running below market expectations at her last start.  Her run prior at benchmark 90 level was good and Kah sticking is a plus.  Consider for multiples.

4. Rich Hips

Won the Mannerism Stakes here first up in the Autumn and maps to get a lovely run from barrier five.  In the mix.

5. Snickerdoodledandy

Talented mare under the care of Peter Moody at Pakenham.  She was impressive winning at Flemington in June over this distance, however she’s up in class here and barrier one looks tricky.  Consider for multiples.

6. Plaquette

Consistent mare who races well at Caulfield.  She won here two starts ago and is another who maps to get a gun run in the race.  Maybe lacking the class to win but she has a place chance.

7. Chassis

Fit and racing well but doubt she is up to this level.

8. Paul’s Regret

Was doing her best work late when third behind Bella Nipotina and Parlophone first up.  Looks a possible improver with the blinkers going on.

9. Parlophone

Get back and run on style of horse.  Both her runs back from a spell have been good but two starts at the distance for no placings has to be a query.

10. Diamonds In The Sky

Looks the likely leader in the race but she was disappointing here at her last start and it is hard to make a case for her rising in grade.
