Launceston Guineas – 2024

There is a small field of 7 runners for the Kevin Sharkie Launceston Guineas with 6 geldings and one filly. Two runners had their last start in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas over 1600m on 5th January (won by Wings Of Song) and two in a 3YO BM 70 Handicap over 2000m at Flemington on 13th January (won by Bold Soul), while the other 3 came via different races. Four are trained in Tasmania and 3 are Victorian raiders. One runner is still a maiden.

The short-priced favourite is Bold Soul who was a winner over 2000m at Flemington last start. Second favourite is Victorian filly Macy Moon who finished 3rd behind Bold Soul. Third favourite is Motorace who has won his last 2 starts – at Albury and Cranbourne. All other runners are currently $15 or longer.

Last-start winner in a 3YO BM 70 Handicap over 2000m at Flemington on 13th January to give him 2 wins and 2 places from his 4 starts. Strong chance.

2. Motorace (7)

He has won his last 2 starts – at Albury over 160om and Cranbourne over 2025m. He hasn’t started since the Cranbournw win on 25th November but has won a recent trial. Looks a promising stayer in the making.

3. Johnnie Pinch (3)

Finished 8th in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas over 1600m on 5th January (won by Wings Of Song) after bumping with another runner. He did win the start before over 1650m at Devonport, so forgive his last run.

4. Thonatus (1)

Last start winner to break his maiden (at his 3rd start) over 1600m at Launceston on 12th January. Place chance.

5. Macy Moon (4)

Finished 0.4 length 3rd behind Bold Soul over 2000m at Flemington last start One of the key chances.

6. Hell Toff (2)

Still a maiden after 3 starts and hasn’t raced beyond 1420m. Will find this hard.

7. Kaboom Kaboom (6)

The only filly in the field. She won 2 races in a row befor fading for 5 lengths 7th in the Tasmanian Guineas. Not the worst.
