G.H. Mumm Century Stakes – 2022

Track: Soft Weather: Overcast

Thirteen runners accepted for this years race but with the early scratchings of He’s A Balter and Taunting only eleven remain. There are nine geldings, one stallion and one mare, with 4 four-year-olds, 2 five-year-olds, 2 six-year-olds and 2 seven-year-olds. Trainer James Cummings has two runners. Two of the runners had their last start in a 1000m race at Moonee Valley on 22 October and two in a 955m race at Moonee Valley on 23 September. The rest all came via different races.

The early favourite is Joyful Fortune who resumed for a 4 length win over 1100m at Flemington then finished 4.9 lengths 10th in The Everest. Second favourite is Zoustyle who ran 3rd in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m then 3rd in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes over 1100m. Third favourite is 2021 winner Halvorsen who finished last campaign with 2nd in the Group 1 Goodwood over 1200m and resumes here from a 23 week spell.

Kallos ran 2nd in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint last start. Athelric faded to finish six lengths off the winner last start in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes over 1200m, while Ashford Street failed to win as a favourite last start over 1000m at Moonee Valley on a heavy track. The other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer.

ran 2nd in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint last start. .

2. Halvorsen (2)

2021 winner Halvorsen who finished last campaign with 2nd in the Group 1 Goodwood over 1200m and resumes here from a 23 week spell.

3. Zoustyle (10)

ran 3rd in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m then 3rd in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes over 1100m.

4. Athelric (5)

faded to finish six lengths off the winner last start in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes over 1200m

5. Joyful Fortune (7)

resumed for a 4 length win over 1100m at Flemington then finished 4.9 lengths 10th in The Everest.

6. Sartorial Splendor (11)

Resumes from a 5 week let-up and has won at this track and distance.

7. Yulong Command (3)

Faded to finish four lengths off the winner last start at Moonee Valley on a soft track when resuming. Should improve second-up.

8. Ashford Street (9)

failed to win as a favourite last start over 1000m at Moonee Valley on a heavy track.

9. He’s A Balter (8)  – SCRATCHED

10. Burning The Clock (4)

Won over 100m at Echuca then over 1000m at Ballarat. Big rise in class but has his chance.

11. Wolflands (12)

Has won 3 of his 7 starts this campaign. Not the worst.

12. Taunting (1)  – SCRATCHED

13. Ojosan (6)

The only mare in the race. She wasn’t far off when 3rd at Moonee Valley. Rough chance.
