Belmont Newmarket 2020 Preview
Track: Soft Weather: Cloudy
There is a field of 8 runners for the $100,000 Belmont Newmarket. Four of them had their last start in the Listed H G Bolton Sprint on 25 July, three had their last start in the Jockey Celebration Day Sprint on 1 August and the other is first-up from a 23 week spell. The early favourite is the topweight Free Trade who has never been unplaced with 8 wins and 7 places from 15 starts. He is resuming from a spell. Second favourite is Floyd who resumed from a spell for a nice win in the Jockey Celebration Day Sprint, while third favourite is Essential Spice who was 3rd in that race following a win in the Listed Beaufine Stakes.
Pym’s Royale ran 6th in the HG Bolton Sprint, behind Multiverse who was 3rd in that race, and who also finished 3rd in this race last year. Lockroy finished 2nd in the Bolton Sprint. Saracino was 5th in the Jockey Celebration Day Sprint, while Profit Street was 10th of 11th in the Bolton and is the outsider of the field currently at 70 to 1.
2020 Belmont Newmarket Runner by Runner
1. Free Trade
He would be a fantastic horse to own as he has always been in the first three home with 8 wins and 7 places from his 15 starts. His last 2 races were a 3.5 length win in the Listed Pinjarra Classic over 13oom on 23 February, followed by a 2.3 length win in the Listed Bunbury Stakes over 1400m on 4 March. He has won 2 recent trials at Belmont and is expected to win.
2. Lockroy
This More Than Ready gelding has improved with each of his three starts this campaign and followed a 4th in the Listed Beaufine Stakes with 2nd in the HG Bolton Sprint last outing, at long odds. He likes this track and shouldn’t be too far from the winner.
3. Essential Spice
She won the Beaufine Stakes before 3rd in the Jockey Celebration Sprint last outing. All 6 of her wins have been over 1000m but she has placed twice over 1200m. She may fade at the end as she struggles with the extra distance, but she does go very well at Belmont.
4. Floyd
He resumed from a spell with a good win in the Jockey Celebration Day Sprint, and as he normally holds his form well second-up I expect him to be fighting out the finish.
5. Profit Street
This nine-year-old gelding has been a great horse but has struggled to find his old form in both starts this campaign. He resumed for 7.2 lengths 7th over 1200m at Belmont, then only beat one runner home in the HG Bolton Sprint. Not here.
6. Saracino
He is a tricky horse to follow and doesn’t win very often as evidenced by his career statistics of 3 wins and 8 places from 33 starts. Two starts back he was 2nd in the Beaufine Stakes then didn’t finish off for 5th in the Jockey Celebration Day Sprint last start. Not expecting to see him in the finish here.
7. Multiverse
This seven-year-old has a good record at this track and distance combination with 7 wins and 4 places from 13 starts. He came 3rd in this race last year and has had three starts this campaign with 3rd in the HG Bolton Sprint last outing. One for the exotics.
8. Pym’s Royale
He resumed for 3.3 lengths 6th in the HG Bolton Sprint and generally goes well second-up. He has won 10 of his 27 starts, so is not without a chance.
