Beaufine Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Soft   Weather: Fine

There are 10 runners for the Beaufine Stakes this year with one mare and 9 geldings. There are two 4YOs, two 5YOs, four 6YOs, one 7YO and one 10YO. Six runners are resuming from a spell, three have had 2 runs since resuming and one has had 7 runs this campaign. All eyes will be on Nerodio who won this race in 2021 and 2022 and is attempting to be the first horse to win this race 3 times. He is trained by Stephanie Bakranich and ridden by Laqdar Ramoly who could become the first jockey to win in 3 consecutive years. Chris & Michael Gangemi have 2 runners.

The early favourite is Real Danger who has won both her starts this campaign – both at this track and distance. Second favourite is Nerodio who is attempting to make history. Third favourite is Ghost Who Walks who has 3 wins and 2 places from his last 5 starts. Comes A Time  goes really well first-up.  The other runners are currently $16 or longer.

2023 Beaufine Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Nerodio (1)

This 7YO Playing God gelding has 6 wins from 6 attempts at this track and distance combination. He won this race in 2021 and 2022 and is attempting to be the first horse to win this race 3 times. He is trained by Stephanie Bakranich and ridden by Laqdar Ramoly who was an apprentice when he won in 2021 and 2022. Hasn’t raced since November but has won one of his 2 trials in June.  Drawn the inside barrier and carries more weight this year. Would love to see him win.

2. Money Matters (8)

One of 2 runners for Chris & Michael Gangemi (the other is True Detective). He hasn’t raced since November, but won a recent trial. He is one of 2 Group winners in the race (the other is True Detective) as he won the Group 3 Roma Cup in 2021. Hasn’t won for a while and tends to need his first-up run. Looking to others.

3. Comes A Time (10)

Resumes from a 33 week spell and has won 3 of his 6 first-up starts. Has been runner-up at both lead-up trials and his record from 6 runs at this track and distance combination is 3 wins and 3 runner-ups. Jockey Chris Parnham won this race in 2019 on Market Ruler. One of the chances.

4. Great Again (7)

This 10YO is the veteran of the field and resumes from a long 42 week spell. 8 of his 10 wins have been at Belmont. Won a trial at this track and distance on 19 June and can run well fresh. Could surprise.

5. Capital Flight (2)

Has had a poor start to this campaign running 11th of 11, then 11th of 12, both on heavy tracks. He can handle soft going and should be fitter for those two runs. Jockey Patrick Carbery has won this race 3 times (2007, 2013 & 2014). The 4YO is having his first attempt at Listed level. Prefer to see.

6. Eeyore Wayz (4)

Resumes from a 17 week spell and his record at this track and distance combination is 5 wins and 3 places from 10 attempts. Likely to settle back in the field and is a place chance.

7. Ghost Who Walks (6)

This 5YO is well into his campaign, having had 7 runs since resuming in April. He is trained by Neville Parnham who has won this race 3 times before with Bovader (1990), Real Magic (1992) & Irish Pride (2003). He’s in great form with 3 wins and 2 places from his last 5 starts. He has had 7 wins over this distance  and should be in the finish.

8. Iseered Iseered (3)

Faded to finish 12th last start at Belmont on a soft track when second-up. Has two wins at this track and distance combination, but prefer to watch him go around.

9. Real Danger (5)

The only mare in the race and she has won both her starts this campaign. Jockey William Pike has won this race 3 times before (2012, 2015 and 2020). She is 2 from 2 at this track and distance and looks capable of winning this.

10. True Detective (9)

This ex Chris Waller horse is having his first run for trainers Chris & Michael Gangemi. First-up after 45 weeks and having his first start at Belmont. Unlikely.
