Sir John Monash Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Soft Weather: Fine

Thhirteen have accepted for the time honoured Sir John Monash Stakes.  As is usually the case with this race the field features a mixture of rock hard fit horses and some resumers with a touch of class.  Ingratiating is one of those.  They thought enough of him to run in the Everest last year and he comes up favourite here under favourable weight for age conditions.  Up and coming mare Sigh is on the next line of betting with Mileva who races at her best fresh.  Malkovich has trialled well between runs and is on the next line of betting.

Sir John Monash Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner

1. Ingratiating

Godolphin galloper.  Goes well first up and loves the track and trip.  Also gets the services of Ben Melham.  Key winning chance here.

2. Malkovich

Race fit Bjorn Baker galloper who has raced well here in the past.  Love that Josh Parr makes the trip down to ride and the trial in between runs was blistering. Ran 2nd in this race in 2021.

3. General Beau

Was under pretty heavy riding a fair way from home last start and just kept staying on behind Sigh.  He’s got enough talent to be very competitive here.

4. Regardsmaree

Resumes.  Would prefer to see him with a run under the belt over further.

5. Zac De Boss

We made him a black booker after he did a fair bit wrong up the straight last start.  Love that the senior rider goes on here but does have some extra weight to carry.

6. Rattle And Bang

Was safely held first up in an easier race.  Needs to improve sharply to be playing any sort of role here.

7. Sweet Ride

Neasham galloper down from Sydney.  Finished second at Group 3 level at the Valley before spelling.  Like the booking of Meech who is a gun front running rider.

8. Katsu

Rock hard fit.  Was second here behind Flying On A Limb with the big weight last start.  Not sure that 1100m suits.

9. Mileva

Last years winner. Resumes off a short break.  Has an extremely good first up record and I like that she was given a solid hit out at the jump outs.  Won it well under riding.  Clear winning chance.

10. Flying Mascot

Quality galloper who resumes off a lengthy lay off.  Her jump outs have been okay with out screaming back me here first up.  Market your best guide.

11. Esta La Roca

Steps to 1100m after finishing second behind Starry Legend over 1000m at Sandown last start.  Doubt she has the class to be winning this.  Place chance.

12. Bless Her

Finished 2nd in this race last year. Resumes.  Goes well at Caulfield but has map and class issues here I think.

13. Sigh

Saved from last week at Flemington to run here.  She’s won both starts this prep and is the one on the upward spiral here but I don’t love barrier 1.  Will need some luck!  Can win if she gets it.
