2017 Melbourne Cup Preview & Tips:
Track: Good Weather: Overcast
Following the early scratching of Who Shot Thebarman, a field of 23, including two mares, will line up for the $6,000,000 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup. The betting is very open and the early favourite is 2016 winner Almandin who will carry 4.5kg more than he did last year, but appears to be a stronger horse now. Second favourite is British stallion Marmelo who looked good when 6th in the Caulfield Cup and is a top stayer. Third favouritism is shared between Johannes Vermeer who ran 3rd in the Caulfield Cup, and Humidor who stretched Winx in the Cox Plate last outing.
Rekindling is the baby of the field and his light weight gives him a chance. Wall Of Fire worked home strongly for 2nd in the Herbert Power at his only Australian start. Max Dynamite ran 2nd here two years ago and wouldn’t be back if his trainer didn’t think he was good enough. Thomas Hobson was bought as a jumps horse and will have no problem with the distance. Red Cardinal has a great strike rate and 2 wins at the distance. Amelie’s Star is a tough staying mare from the Weir stable and Big Duke is in great form for this. All other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer, but as always there are many hopes.
The trifecta and first four should pay heaps so have fun putting your favourites in some multiples.
