The Todman Stakes winner is exempt from the ballot for the Golden Slipper.

The race was first held in 1973 as a Principal Race called the Todman Slipper Trial over 1200m at Rosehill Gardens and was won by Imagele. In 1980 it became a Group 3 race then was upgraded to the current Group 2 status in 1986. In 2008 it was run at Canterbury, It continued at Rosehill up to 2014 and then from 2015 onwards switched to its current home of Randwick.

The race is held on the same day as the Riesling Stakes which is the equivalent race for two-year-old fillies

Interesting trivia: Two colts that have finished second in the Todman Stakes have won the Golden Slipper – Sir Dapper (1983) and Marscay (1982).
