The race was first run in 1996 over 1100m at Morphettville when it was won by Khaptrist, trained by David J Hall and ridden by Alf Matthews. The same trainer and jockey combination won the following year with Catainer. In 2001 and 2002 the race was held over 1000m at Victoria Park, then for 2003, 2004 and 2005 it was over 1000m at Cheltenham before returning to 1100m at Morphettville for 2006 and 2007. In 2008 and 2009 it was back to 1000m at Cheltenham then was run over 1000m at Morphettville Parks in 2010 and 2011 before returning to Morphettville in 2012. From 2012 to 2014 it was held over 1050m before reverting back to the current 1100m distance in 2015.
