Lightning Handicap – 2023

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Open race with plenty of hopes. Spacewalk rocketed home last start and was a good thing beat. Just about wins this race with a clean crack at them and suitable run in transit. Malkovich will take luck out of the equation and land on the speed while Athelric bounced back to its best last start and maps to get the right run from barrier 1. Godolphin hold a strong hand with 2 of the market elects being first and second favoruites.

1. Athelric (1)

Lucky to win last start against Quantico but that looks the right form for this and drawn well on the rails. Should get the perfect trial behind the leaders and will prove hard to hold out at the business end of things.

2. Malkovich (4)

Just fair last start. Has a few lengths to find on Athelric and did get all the favours fresh. In the mix.

3. Simply Fly (11)

Doing a bit wrong lately. Prefer others.

4. Mishani Sniper (13)

In rare form right now and can give a bold sight despite the wide draw. Goes in the mix.

5. Archer’s Paradox (15)

Likeable second up and has a good record on this track. Can lob on the speed and give a strong sight.

6. Better Get Set (12)

Market watch fresh. Will need luck from the draw but good enough to go close.

7. Le Palmier (10)

No luck last start and just needs luck at the right time to figure in this. Ticking along well and should give a bold sight.

8. Petronius (5)

Market watch fresh. Hasn’t won for a while but can give a bold sight in this. Goes close.

9. Rubiquitous (3)

Maps well and had an excellent last prep. Should get a dream run in transit with the light weight and was unlucky fresh last prep. Winning hope.

11. Spacewalk (8)

Good thing beaten last run after showing a booming turn of foot. A horse that always needs luck but can win this if it finds any whatsoever.

Can’t have.

Prefer others.

15e. Deepour (6)

Superb last prep and well placed in this if they run here.

16e. Reliable Ruby (9)

This looks too tough.
