Hellova Street Stakes – 2024

Following the early scratching of Supagirl there are 8 runners for the Steve’s Liquor Hellova Street Stakes. They are all geldings with two 5YOs, three 6YOs, two 7YOs and a 10YO. Five runners had their last start in the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m at Hobart on 11th February (won by Just A Tribute), while the other 3 came via different races. Two runners are trained by John Blacker and two by Glenn Stevenson.

The early favourite is Victorian gelding Keats who has 5 wins at the distance and was 3rd in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield 4 starts ago. Second favourite is First Accused who was 0.5 length 2nd in the Thomas Lyons Stakes last  start. Third favourite is Turk Warrior who was 3rd in that race and has a great record at this track. Alpine Wolf was 4th in the Thomas Lyons last start and ran 3rd in this race last year. All other runners are currently $10 or longer.

1. Turk Warrior (8)

Ran 3rd in the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m at Hobart on 11th February (won by Just A Tribute). He has a great record at this track but has yet to win beyond 1400m. Think the 1600m is too long for him but can still place.

2. Keats (6)

Victorian gelding who has 5 wins at the distance and was 3rd in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield 4 starts ago. Should go well.

3. First Accused (1)

He was 0.5 length 2nd in the Thomas Lyons Stakes last  start. Three starts ago he won the Listed Tasmanian Stakes over 1600m at Hobart on 29th December, beating Swoop Dog and Indispensable. Strong chance.

4. Indispensable (5)

Finished 2.6 lengths 6th in the Thomas Lyons but had a win and 2 placings from his 3 previous starts. In the mix.

5. Swoop Dog (3)

Ran 2nd in this race last year. Dropping back in distance after running in the Group 3 Hobart Cup over 2400m on 11th February. Chance.

6. Alpine Wolf (9)

Finished 3rd in this race last year. Last start he was 4th in the Thomas Lyons. Can figure in the finish.

7. Sir Simon (4)

This 10YO is the oldest runner in the race this year. He’s still racing well in open company and should acquit himself well.

8. Just A Tribute (7)

Stormed home from last to win the Thomas Lyons last start at big odds, beating many of his competitors in this race. Could surprise again.
