The race was first held at Caulfield as a Listed race for three-year-olds called The Peter Jackson in 1989 when it was won by Almurtajaz. The following year it took its current name to honour Zeditave who won the 1988 Blue Diamond Stakes and the 1989 Futurity Stakes. It was moved to Sandown from 1994 to 1996 then returned to Caulfield in 1997, although it was also held at Sandown in 2006. From 2005 it became a three-year-old colts and geldings race, and fillies were no longer eligible. From 2005 to 2013 it was held on the Australia Day holiday. In 2014 it was upgraded to the current Group 3 status and moved to Blue Diamond Stakes day.

Interesting trivia: 2019 winner Terbium was out of Serene Lass who was sired by 2005 winner Not A Single Doubt.
