The race has had many different names over the years. In 2000 it was called the Reckless Handicap, from 2001 to 2006 it was the Marco Polo Handicap, from 2007 to 2009 the Phil Sullivan Handicap, from 2010 to 2014 the Strawberry Road Handicap and from 2015 it has been The Wayne Wilson.
Wayne Wilson called Queensland races for Radio TAB from the station’s inception in 1991 until his last call in 2013. He passed away in 2014 after a brave 15-year battle with cancer.
