The Beauford Race History
The Beauford was first run in 2021 as a new feature race announced by Racing NSW to add to The Hunter standalone program that debuted in 2019 to promote the wider Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Newcastle racecourse hosts a standalone meeting on the Saturday and can attract some of the best sprinters with no competition from a Sydney metropolitan meeting. The meeting also has the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m), previously held in September on Newcastle Cup Day and the Max Less Classic over 900m for 2YOs as well as The Hunter (1300m).
The inaugural race was won by 5YO stallion Torrens from Warwick Farm trainer Lauri Parker and ridden by 2kg claiming apprentice Jenny Duggan in her biggest win.
In 2024 the race was upgraded to Listed status at the same time as the The Hunter was awarded Group 2 status.
