The race was first held as a Group 3 race at Randwick in 1980 and was won by  filly called Moabite. From 1993 to 2004 it was a Group 2 race then returned to Group 3 from 2005 to 2012. It returned to the current Group 2 status in 2013. It is the first leg of the fillies Princess Series in Sydney and the other legs are the Furious Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes.

Interesting trivia: I Am Invincible sired the 2019 winner (Libertini) and the 2018 winner (Fiesta). Brothers Brian Mayfield-Smith (Soda Springs 1987 & Diamond Shower 1986) and Noel Mayfield-Smith (Angst 1993) have both trained winners of this race.
