The race was first run in 2019 when it was won by five-year-old gelding Tally trained by James Cummings and ridden by James McDonald. It was one of the new races created as part of the revamp of the Sydney Spring Carnival to have at least one race with prizemoney of $1 million or more each Saturday over nine weekends in New South Wales from late September to late November.

A half-million bonus is attached to it for any horse that wins the race after having won either the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) or Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) , and either the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) or the St Leger (2600m).

It is run on the same day as The Golden Eagle, which is the same date as Victoria Derby day in Melbourne.
