Tab Wave – 2023

Track: Good Weather: Good

The Magic Millions carnival kicks off in the Gold Coast and the Tab Wave consists of a very even and wide spread field. Leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan will have Ashgrove primed for this assignment and this is the right race for it. The Cunning Fox is a promising stayer and brings across some strong form from Victoria. Deficit needs to lift on recent efforts but its best would go close in this race. There isn’t much speed engaged in this so the leaders may be hard to run down.

1. The Cunning Fox (14)

The Cunning Fox looks on track and didn’t have much luck last start as a $3.50 chance. It should be ready to peak in this and Craig Williams hops aboard. Some navigating needs to be done from the wide draw but this is a suitable race. Hard to beat.

2. Deficit (5)

The best version of Deficit would take this race out, we just haven’t seen that this prep. Seemed to have its chance last start but does drop from the right races and Avdulla steers from the ideal draw. Mixing form this prep but on its best efforts it just about wins this. Keep safe.

3. Akihiro (11)

Akihiro is having a good prep and William Pike does the steering from the awkward draw. Gary Portelli is a great trainer at priming them for the big races. Akihiro is a good chance in this.

4. Military Gambler (17)

Having a consistent prep but barrier 17 in a big field poses a few questions. Will need some luck.

5. Ashgrove (8)

Tony Gollan is one of the best at getting them primed for the big races and Ashgrove is coming off a good last start win. While this is a big leap in grade there is a good sense of timing about it. Short enough in the market but does look a major player.

6. Kipling’s Journey (3)

Best to keep an eye on the market and respect any moves.

7. Mr Dudwey (10)

Can’t have.

8. Top Boy (15)

Great T.V show. Top Boy does look a bit outclassed in this.

9. Head Of State (6)

The market should tell the story with Head Of State who’s best efforts are better than these but we haven’t seen that for quite some time. James McDonald booked fresh tells plenty of intent. Watch the market.

10. Bulloo (9)

Expected to see more from Bulloo this prep. Big player on its best form but isn’t having a great prep. Prefer others.

11. Mishani Spartan (16)

The Ross stable will be represented throughout the carnival and he has Mishani Spartan jumping from the wide draw. Ben Thompson is an eye catching booking and it has put together 2 excellent efforts in its past 2 runs. Capable type that can take this out.

12. Tyresa (1)

Should get every chance from barrier 1. I do believe Tyresa is better than its efforts so far this prep and should be ready to peak for this race 4th up. Great chance on best form.

13. Sebring Giel (18)

Likeable win last start. The question is where does it land from barrier 18? Some hope if the draw comes in significantly after scratchings.

14. Gracie Blue (4)

Prefer in something easier.

15. Thalassophile (12)

No jockey engaged and barrier 12 in a packed field means luck in running is required. Does bring in the right form lines and has some class on the field but a bit needs to go right from the draw.

16. Naval Seal (7)

Mixes f0rm but has shown glimpses of ability and Chris Waller does have a strong opinion of the horse. Best when ridden off the speed, it can sit midfield and have one last crack at them. Good chance.

17. Circling (13)

Prefer others.

18. Ghostwriter (2)

Needs a few scratchings to make the field and no jockey currently booked. Maps Kindly and the stable are having an excellent run. Keep safe if it gains a start.
