Track: Soft-Heavy   Weather: Showers

Nine three year old colts will line up in one of the main lead ups to the Victorian Derby.  The bookmakers have made the Danny O’Brien trained Young Werther an early favourite in this years race.  Young Werther impressed on debut in a Geelong maiden before running an unlucky second at Flemington.  Cherry Tortoni failed in Sydney last start but his form prior reads well for a race like this.  Khoekhoe was well backed and dually saluted last start and is sure to have plenty of fans again here.

Lunar Fox and Captain Corelli comes through the Caulfield Guinea’s, finishing fifth and eighth respectively.  Tanker was an easy winner in his last race which was run at Moonee Valley.  The remaining three runners are $20-1 or longer.

1. Khoekhoe

Khoekhoe was heavily supported in the Super Impose Stakes at Flemington three weeks ago and didn’t let the punters down with a come from behind victory.  Albarado finished third in the race and franked the form by winning the Caulfield Classic last week.  He has shown in the past he can handle rain affected tracks.  One of the main chances.

2. Lunar Fox

One of two horses in the race to have had their last start in the Caulfield Guinea’s.  He worked home fairly from back in the field to finish fifth in that.  Can he run 2000m?

3. Cherry Tortoni

Cherry Tortoni was building nicely until a third up failure in a strong edition of the Champion Stakes in Sydney.   That was the first time he has missed a placing in six starts.  If he can pick up the form he left off with in Melbourne he is right in this.

4. Tanker

An easy victor in benchmark 64 grade at this track last start.  Needs to improve to be beating these but the stable/jockey are flying.

5. Captain Corelli

Captain Corelli settled behind the leader in the Caulfield Guineas and stuck on okay.  The step up in trip should be too his liking – as will any cut out of the ground.  Don’t rule him out.

6. Young Werther

The Danny O’Brien stable is flying at the moment and they look to have another good 3 yo in Young Werther.  He was held up at Flemington but once clear found the line very nicely.  Winkers go on – he is a deserved favourite.

7. Johnny Get Angry

Came from along way back to finish on the heels of the place getters at Flemington.  A rain affected track will likely help him.  Now third up, he is ready to run well and is an each way chance at big odds.

8. Sarodec

On the quick back up after winning a Bendigo maiden last week.  This is much harder.

9. Reliable Lovin’

Stable mate of Sarodec.  Also on the quick back up after winning a Bendigo maiden last week.  This is likely too hard.
